Two men wearing sunglasses and blue lanyards stand outside a building with a sign reading KOTO Radio. One man wears a wide-brimmed hat, and the other has a beard. They are standing casually with trees in the background.

Artist Javier Mariscal, left, and Filmmaker Fernando Trueba stopped by KOTO while in town for the Film Festival.

A new film from the creative collaborators Javier Mariscal and Fernando Trueba is premiering at 2023’s Telluride Film Festival. Both men have storied careers — Trueba’s films have collected a slate of international honors while Mariscal’s multi-disciplinary visual practice has made him a major figure in the design world.

Their latest work is born from a passion for Bossa Nova music, and for the life-giving powers of illustration and animation. While in town for the Film Fest, Mariscal and Trueba took some time to stop by KOTO and discuss this latest work: They Shot the Piano Player.
