This valley floor belongs to all of us. There\u2019s no houses, there\u2019s no golf courses out there. It belongs to all of us,<\/em>\u201d she continues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-287-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5a8537bba803bb2f79bbf41f\/t\/646795fe67bc4f0176694868\/1684510213632\/ValleyFloorInsert.mp3\/original\/ValleyFloorInsert.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5a8537bba803bb2f79bbf41f\/t\/646795fe67bc4f0176694868\/1684510213632\/ValleyFloorInsert.mp3\/original\/ValleyFloorInsert.mp3\">https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5a8537bba803bb2f79bbf41f\/t\/646795fe67bc4f0176694868\/1684510213632\/ValleyFloorInsert.mp3\/original\/ValleyFloorInsert.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<div class=\"sqs-html-content\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201c<em>The town already celebrates Valley Floor on May Ninth, and we try to make our day as close to that as possible,<\/em>\u201d Holbrooke explains. \u201c<em>But today as you can see is a beautiful day with the birds singing and we\u2019re super happy to be out here<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It\u2019s May 17th, Valley Floor Day for Telluride Elementary\u2019s youngest students. Although Pinhead organizes the annual day of experiential education, folks from educational non-profits across town turn out to lead activities ranging from a pollinator scavenger hunt to a historical construction project. Theresa Koenigsknecht of the Telluride Museum explains the gist of her station. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201c<em>The first peoples who lived here were \u2014 and still are \u2013 the Ute Peoples, and on the Valley Floor they would come here in the summers and build hunting shelters,<\/em>\u201d says Koenigsknecht. \u201c<em>So we\u2019re going to engineer a shelter with the kids. They [the Ute] would call them wiki-ups, but people also probably think of them as teepees<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Over closer to the river, which runs high and brown with the spring snowmelt, Elena Hausser says she\u2019ll go more into the science side of things.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201c<em>I work for the Wastewater Treatment Plant so I\u2019m going to be talking about nutrients in the river and how that affects life and biology in the rivers. Then we\u2019re going to do a little activity where we throw pine cones or sticks into the river to see where the river is moving fastest<\/em>,\u201d Hausser says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Observing the water rushing by will teach kids about the erosion which has carved out the box canyon they call home\u2026Or that\u2019s the theory at least. But, Adrian Bergere, director of the San Miguel Watershed Coalition adds, really, it&#8217;s the values behind the day which he hopes stick with the kids over the years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201c<em>I don\u2019t think they\u2019ll remember a ton of the specifics, but I hope that this up-and-coming generation remains appreciative of the space and continues to use the space for fishing or paddling or going for a hike, and that they can appreciate the ecological values and not just the recreational values,<\/em>\u201d Bergere reflects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Over at the Pollinator Station, first grader Roc Owens has found something he\u2019d like to share:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201c<em>A butterfly!<\/em>\u201d says Owens. \u201c<em>And baby bees?<\/em>\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Bella Caralli, who reports she\u2019s seen ducks and algae in the pond says this isn\u2019t her first time coming out to the Valley Floor. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201c<em>We\u2019ve been out here before. And today makes special because we get to explore the nature and explore new animals and it\u2019s fun to be out in nature,<\/em>\u201d says Caralli.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">For Lia Cristadoro, director of the Telluride Institute&#8217;s Watershed Education Program, the repetition of the day is part of its importance <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201c<em>I just love that it happens every year. I think it\u2019s a great opportunity for kids to explore their own relationship with nature and reciprocity with land, and starting that young helps us create stewards when they\u2019re older. I think that\u2019s really important,<\/em>\u201d says Cristadoro. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The Valley Floor Day is now in its sixth year. It\u2019s greeted countless excited kids with a display of animal and bird life, budding flora, and the signs of a Telluride spring arriving at long last. Holbrooke concurs, having kids back again and again will drive home their belonging in this place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201c<em>If you think of it, there are three different grades here: the kindergartners, the first graders, and the second graders.
