It won\u2019t be long before the Telluride High School is once again bustling with students \u2013 going from one class to another, chatting with friends. But on a clear evening in August, the lobby of the Palm Theatre is bustling with law enforcement and paramedics.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate that it\u2019s come to something that we need to train in our schools, for something like this. Having Columbine happened over twenty years ago, we\u2019re expected to be proficient at these scenarios,\u201d<\/em> says Telluride Chief Marshal Josh Comte.<\/p>\n

Officers from the Telluride Marshal\u2019s Department and Mountain Village Police Department, San Miguel County Sheriff\u2019s Office, and Telluride Fire Protection District are gathered together for an active shooter training.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Chief Comte starts with a debrief on how the training is going to go.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have two scenarios. We\u2019re going to literally walking through these. So we going to walk through it, work on going through the motions, make mistakes,\u201d <\/em>he says.<\/p>\n

The training on this night is focusing on getting a shooter contained in a location, moving rescue task forces into the building, triaging victims and getting them to safety \u2013 victims in this training are portrayed by pieces of paper with descriptions written on them \u2013 some say deceased, others describe how the individual is wounded.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re asking for stuff with unified command, ask for it. We\u2019re not going to have dispatch repeating that, but we want to hear you guys voice what you\u2019re doing,\u201d <\/em>Comte briefs, \u201cIf you\u2019re asking for multiple helicopters, multiple units from other agencies, voice it as realistic as we can to get these agencies rolling.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

In the first scenario, a shooter is near the gym in the intermediate school.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo it\u2019s a Monday morning, say 11 o\u2019clock. Jimmy\u2019s our [Student Resources Officer], Jeremy\u2019s our deputy working patrol,\u201d <\/em>Comte announces to the group. \u201cJeremy\u2019s here for a meeting and we get calls of a \u2018shots fired\u2019 in the intermediate school on the north side.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Two Marshal Deputies enter the scenario.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs they\u2019re passing, they\u2019re main job is to go to the threat,\u201d <\/em>Comte explains. \u201cWe have our role players, which is our pieces of paper, with should indicate to them \u2013 with open doors as well \u2013 that this is where our first mass casualty incident is.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Comte adds, \u201cthe way it should work, is they should start seeing these issues, start seeing that we have this room with a lot of people down. So this should be our first casualty collection point. We want [paramedics] to grab people, bring them in here, and then start treating them as best as they can. Law enforcement will provide cover on the windows and the doors and everything else.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The scenario wraps in about fifteen minutes. Law enforcement set up a security corridor, paramedics carry victims to safety.<\/p>\n

The scenario wasn\u2019t completely flawlessly. There\u2019s room for improvement, but Comte notes that\u2019s the point \u2013 training to get better, and to be prepared for the unexpected.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all going to be game time decisions. My favorite quote is by Mike Tyson, \u2018Everyone\u2019s got a plan until you get punched in the face\u2019. So we\u2019re going to come in here with the best case scenario, and it\u2019s going to change,\u201d <\/em>Comte concludes. \u201cIt\u2019s always going to change.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

It\u2019s all to ensure, Chief Comte says, they\u2019re up to the task, if the unfortunate time comes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
