The Free Box is free once more.<\/p>\n

Boarded up in March 2020, it was one of the first local casualties of the COVID pandemic. Now, a year and a half later, the community institution is reopened.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t be happier.\u201d<\/em> Says Becky Boehm, Free Box Supervisor, \u201cI was heartbroken the day it got closed, and I had no idea I\u2019d be standing here, on the of the people opening it back up. I\u2019m just thrilled and couldn\u2019t be happier. This is a dream come true.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The boards come down, and sat in the cubbies is over a year of discarded clothes, some toys, and dust. A lot of dust. It\u2019s a time capsule of sorts. The items are what sat in the Free Box in March 2020. Not all of the relics are treasures.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s some trash in here, some mismatched shoes,\u201d <\/em>says Boehm, \u201cdefinitely there\u2019 some stuff we wouldn\u2019t recommend leaving \u2013 underwear, we don\u2019t need to have that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a good reminder of how to love the free box the right way.<\/p>\n

\u201cA good motto to keep in mind is, \u2018share respectfully\u2019. Don\u2019t bring items you wouldn\u2019t wear or that are stained or are ripped \u2013 clothing wise,\u201d <\/em>notes Boehm, \u201cplease no electronics. We\u2019re trying to keep items off the sidewalks, just in the box only. No trash, this isn\u2019t a trash dump. No paints, no furniture, be respectful. Think about it being your home. If we can all treat it and love it just the same, and respect it the way it should be, I think it\u2019s going to be a big success.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

As the boards come down a local or two peak around Pine Street to witness the moment. Local artist Brandon Berkel comes to collect one of the mural that adorned the plywood panels.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is so exciting,\u201d <\/em>exclaims one passerby. \u201cI\u2019m not going to overload   it; I hope people don\u2019t. I just have a couple little things.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n

As for Boehm, she has a small pile of items waiting to put in the free box, and she\u2019s keeping her eye out as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cA winter coat and winter boots, that\u2019s what I\u2019m looking for,\u201d <\/em>she chuckles.<\/p>\n

The pandemic may not be over, but signs of the funky weird Telluride are coming back to life. One Telluridians trash can be another\u2019s treasure once more.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
