Telluride\u2019s Young People\u2019s Theatre presents \u201cThe Jungle Book\u201d via Zoom<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

If you\u2019ve been to a production from the Sheridan Arts Foundation\u2019s Young People\u2019s Theatre, the sound of an overture is familiar.<\/p>\n

But unlike most YPT productions, when the actors arrive on stage, it\u2019s not on the stage of the Sheridan Opera House. It\u2019s in a small screen, on Zoom.<\/p>\n

This year, YPT is performing the musical The Jungle Book<\/em> is based on Rudyard Kiplings 1894 book about a young child \u2013 named Mowgli \u2013 raised by a pack of wolves in the Jungle. Throughout the musical, Mowgli goes travels through the forest, and comes across a number of animal characters including a black panther named Bagheera, a bear called Baloo, and Queen Louie, queen of the orangutans. <\/p>\n

YPT was originally scheduled to produce The Jungle Book<\/em> in May.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately because of COVID, we had to call that off, because that would have not been safe or smart or legal,\u201d <\/em>says Leah Heidenreich, Artistic Director for the Young People\u2019s Theatre \u2013 a non-competitive children\u2019s theatre company in Telluride.<\/p>\n

But COVID or no, Heidenreich was adamant that the show must go on.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just didn\u2019t want to completely shut it down. You know, there is so much technology nowadays, where you can make anything work,\u201d <\/em>she says, \u201cand there\u2019s no wrong way to create art, because it\u2019s subjective.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

So she turned to Zoom. <\/p>\n

Heidenreich says, \u201cZoom has just kind of taken over the world since COVID hit, and I was seeing a lot of theatre companies put together these Zoom productions, and I thought \u2018you know, I think we can do that too\u2019\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

It may be hard to envision what a Zoom version of a musical looks like, but in this iteration of The Jungle Book<\/em>, actors (grades 3 through 5), pull it off flawlessly. Actors pop in and out of their screen in costume, with backdrops hanging behind them to create the ambiance of a jungle.<\/p>\n

Musical numbers are scaled back when it comes to chorography, but characters sing and dance their way through the story, finding ways to incorporate the technology into the plot line \u2013 picture a cast full of actors peering deeply into their computer camera when they spot Mowgli for the first time.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s clear The Jungle Book<\/em> on Zoom isn\u2019t the same as performing on a stage in front of a live audience.<\/p>\n

Evan Strogner is 11 years old and plays Baloo, the bear. He\u2019s been performing with YPT for years, but like everyone else, this is the first time performing YPT over Zoom. Strogner says even he was a little concerned about how performing them musical was going to work over zoom.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019How are we going to do this. Oh no, what are we going to do?\u2019 <\/em>Strongner remembers thinking, \u201cand then I got in and Leah started explaining and I thought \u2018oh, this is actually really cool.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

And he says performing over Zoom has helped to show just how much is possible\u2026even during a pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though there is a pandemic where you can\u2019t get closer to people, you can still do things,\u201d <\/em>Strogner says, \u201cIt\u2019s going to be a little different, but it\u2019s not going to be super super different.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Ruby Chechu agrees. Chechu is 10-years old and plays Queen Louis. She says even with the constraints of an online platform, the cast \u2013 with Heidenreich\u2019s guidance \u2013 has been able to create a full production that feels like a proper show \u2013 complete with entrances, exits, and blocking.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s kind of the best aspect of the show this year because even though we\u2019re not doing it all together in the same place, we still have that aspect of a real show,\u201d <\/em>Chechu says.<\/p>\n

Strongner adds, traditional stage or no, the trill of acting is still there.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re in that moment,\u201d <\/em>he says, \u201cand you\u2019re in there moving, you do feel you\u2019re on stage. Which is really cool.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

YPT\u2019s The Jungle Book<\/em> will take place Tuesday, July 7th through Thursday, July 9th at 6 p.m. on Facebook Live.
