Within five minutes, Deputy Chief of Operations Trago Staats was on scene and reported heavy smoke.

“So we got the page for a structure fire at 5:52 a.m. yesterday morning,” Bockrath said. “Trago Staats, my deputy chief of operations, lives in town and he was first on the scene. He was on scene within five minutes. He reported heavy smoke showing from the swamp cooler and from the eaves of the building, and they were going to be attempting an interior attack.”

Bockrath said he called for mutual aid from the Telluride Fire Protection District and the Nucla-Naturita Fire Protection District as he made his way into town.

“My concern was not actually having eyes on the smoke. He did report no flames at that time,” Bockrath said. “But my concern is and has been my concern since day one when I got here nine years ago — is a fire downtown, because none of those buildings are sprinklered and they are literally right next door to each other. Most of those buildings are actually wall to wall. There isn’t any space between them. None of them are sprinklered, and I knew I had a full hotel two doors down that was actually attached to all of this. So my concern was, yes, it was the Cone, but it was also the fire spreading.”

Fire crews entered the saloon looking for the source of the smoke.

“Our engine made a hydrant hookup and went interior, and they found heavy smoke all the way down to the floor — not much heat — and as they progressed along the bar, the nice thing is everyone knows the layout of the building, so they followed along the bar,” Bockrath said. “As they got farther towards the back of the building, which would be the south end of the building, they found a lot more heat and they wound up going into what the Cone refers to as the storage room. We’re calling it a mechanical room because that’s where the water heater was, the heater, gas lines, a few other things. We’re calling it the utility room. They found the door to the utility room and they also saw flames coming out from the bottom of the door and the wall next to it. They made entry, found fire and heavy smoke conditions, were able to extinguish the fire relatively quickly, and then they started to clear the building.”

Bockrath said the fire was fully extinguished by 7:45 a.m., about an hour and 45 minutes after the call came in. The fire burned through the floors and into an attic space, but the historic 1883 Brunswick Imperial Bar was preserved thanks to quick thinking by an off-duty firefighter.

“I was busy running command. He’s an off-duty Telluride firefighter — he had just gotten off duty that morning. He helps us with training here, he’s one of my training officers and one of our volunteers,” Bockrath said. “He heard the page come in and went straight to the fire, and as the crews were going in, he told my chief of operations, Trago, ‘Make sure you get a tarp and cover that bar.’ So that’s Eric. Eric did that — it was great.”

Bockrath praised the support from Nucla-Naturita and Telluride, both of which responded within 25 minutes and assisted on scene.

“We did everything we possibly could to limit our water supply — short bursts of water rather than massive amounts of fire — because this definitely was a saveable structure,” he said. “And can be reconstructed, and I did not want to do any more damage with water. Fire does enough damage, but water actually does more damage than the fire itself.”

From the outside, the Lone Cone Saloon appears relatively unharmed. Bockrath confirmed there were no injuries and no other structures were damaged.

“I do want to thank Davia Mole and Julie Thornycroft almost simultaneously,” he said. “Julie Thornycroft owns a bakery next door. She came in and she noticed smoke, called 911, and Davia works at Mesa Rose across the street — a little bakery. She was there early too. She looked out the window, she saw smoke in the street, and she said, ‘This isn’t right,’ and she called 911. So if they didn’t make those phone calls when they did, we may still be putting fire out down the whole block.”

Bockrath said the scene remains closed to the public. The investigation has been turned over to the State of Colorado.

Telluride Keeps Compliant with State Housing Funding

In 2022, Colorado voters approved Proposition 123, which made available approximately $300 million in affordable housing funding from the state.

In order to be eligible for funding, a jurisdiction needed to opt in — which Telluride did. To continue being eligible for funds, a town must do two things before the end of 2026.

“[We need to] meet the appropriate commitment increase of affordable housing units from the submitted baseline, and to demonstrate and codify an expedited review process on affordable housing projects as applicable to the state statute,” said James Van Hooser, Community Housing Manager for the Town of Telluride, speaking at a Town Council meeting last week.

Based on Telluride’s baseline, Van Hooser said the state requires Telluride to build a minimum of 12 additional affordable housing units by the end of 2026. But the state has a specific definition of “affordable.”

“The definition pursuant to the state is rental housing at or below 60% AMI, or for-sale housing at or below 100% AMI,” Van Hooser said. “There’s also a provision that households not be cost burdened, so no more than 30% of monthly income.”

The town could pursue a rural resort reclassification to allow that AMI to be higher — acknowledging a high cost of living — but Van Hooser noted he believes the town could hit the requirement without added flexibility.

“We think we could get there. We’ve got 65 units that are currently entitled and permitted. Canyonlands and Tower House, if units within that project met the threshold, would be eligible. As would all of Shandoka Building F. Rehabilitation of existing units also counts and there are new units being put into Building F as well. So that’s a pool of 65 units that we could draw from to meet this 12-unit requirement,” he said.

For the town to meet the expedited review process requirement, it will likely have to put a new process in place. Councilmember Ashley Von Spreecken clarified that a developer wouldn’t be required to go through the expedited process, but it could if it wanted.

“If we choose to do this, we’re essentially going to build an express lane along the side of our building highway, and the express lane is specifically for this type of deed-restricted projects,” Von Spreecken said. “There’s nothing that says you have to get in the express lane. If our system is working and we don’t feel like we need to leapfrog, we don’t have to drive in the express lane, but the express lane exists for projects if they choose.”

Town Council is supportive of continuing to opt in on Proposition 123 funds. Telluride will work toward meeting the unit and expedited review process requirements to remain eligible for funding.

A World Tour with Telluride Chamber Music

If music be the food of love, play on. Telluride Chamber Music understood the brief. This month, it’s kicking off its summer MusicFest, Summer Soirées.

“MusicFest is quite a unique thing. It’s sort of a ten-day celebration of music and chamber music in town,” said Claire Beard, executive director of Telluride Chamber Music.

“It takes place in this beautiful private home, that’s actually a restored barn that overlooks Sunshine Mountain. It’s really intimate,” added Beard. “We do three main concerts there and each concert also includes a themed reception afterwards with themed food. It’s a really fun event.”

The festival will begin with a frame drum workshop, hosted by Yousif Sheronick.

“He’s a world-renowned percussionist. Drums will be included. It will be in a circle and he’ll be teaching people drum strokes. It’s actually called Rhythm of the Healing Arts, because a lot of people use drum rhythm as a wellness tool,” noted Beard.

Following the workshop will be three concerts, each with a geographical theme.

“The first one is all about a celebration of German music,” explained Beard. “There’s a really rich history of German music. Beautiful composers like Brahms and Schumann, and then they also always mix it up with some contemporary things as well.”

The second concert will focus on music from South America.

“That’s going to be a nice fiery program that has a lot of fun stuff in it,” she added.

Finally, the last concert will highlight music from Italy.

“There’s so much history of classical music from Italy, which is beautiful. But it also includes some surprises,” said Beard. “It finishes with a quintet that’s an arrangement of Frank Sinatra tunes. So, it really mixes the traditional classical with some other things thrown in. So, it’s some really fun programs.”

Beard noted chamber music is for everyone.

“It really connects to the human experience. It’s a really stripped-down version of music, there’s no microphones or anything like that. It’s stood the test of time because it’s been a way that people connect with human emotion and have that release,” she said.

Plus, she said, it’s a good time.

“There’s nothing hoity-toity about it. You don’t have to be in your fanciest clothes,” shared Beard. “Come, enjoy some gorgeous music, a beautiful view, you get a glass of wine thrown in. There’s nothing not to love.”

The Summer Soirées series will kick off on Thursday, June 26, with a Frame Drum Workshop at the Sheridan Opera House.

Concerts will take place on Sunday, June 29; Wednesday, July 2; and Sunday, July 6.

There will also be free events on Tuesday, July 1, including a Family Concert at the library and a Local Artists Night.

Tickets are available at telluridechambermusic.org.

Pickleball Clinics this Summer

Ever wonder what those small tennis racquets are for? Those people playing what looks like tennis on miniature courts? It’s probably pickleball.

Join coach Kristin Milord and the Wilkinson Public Library for a beginner pickleball clinic on Thursday, June 12. The clinic is free, though signups are limited to eight players per session.

If you miss Thursday’s event, there are two more chances: clinics will also be held on July 10 and Aug. 7. Sign up at telluridelibrary.org.

Bike Repair at the Library

The sun is out, and it’s time to hit the bike trails.

This summer, the Wilkinson Public Library is helping the community get ready with a new bicycle repair, air pump and bike wash station.

The setup includes a sturdy repair stand and an array of tools for basic bike maintenance—from adjusting brakes to fixing a flat. The air pump works with both Presta and Schrader valves. Cyclists can also rinse off trail dust or mud at the wash station.

The repair station is located just outside the library garage in the alleyway and is accessible 24/7.

Lawsuit Against Governor Jared Polis Continues

A whistleblower lawsuit filed last week against Gov.
