As approved in the 2016 and 2024 Airport Master Plans, the expansions will accommodate increased air traffic for private and commercial jets, as well as short- and long-term parking.

San Miguel County commissioners held a public hearing for the required wetlands permit during their regular meeting Wednesday, June 11.

Telluride Regional Airport, in service since the mid-1980s, underwent a significant runway expansion in 2009. That project required nine compensatory wetlands mitigation ponds on the south side of the airport. The $50 million project drew criticism from a coalition of local residents called Citizens for a Safe, Small, Quiet Telluride Airport.

Wetland engineers identified 1.5 acres of wetlands on the new 35-acre parcel slated for development. The new project would add two compensatory wetlands to the existing nine.

“Right, and I think the responsibility of this development is to be mindful about where water is running off and how it could potentially charge these compensatory wetlands,” Commissioner Galena Gleason said. “Because there are only two that are active, to me that means the other six that are identified shouldn’t be kind of built into the plan. Because they are adjacent to the other two, they are kind of indirectly or directly protected ‘quote on quote’ because of that space around them. Huebner—and they are proposed to protect that area with stormwater runoff with proposed insulation that will be permitted insulation at the project—and that’s more than just protecting the identified wetland area, but protecting the entire mitigation site.”

That’s County Planner John Huebner, who presented to commissioners. Currently, only two of the existing compensatory wetlands are active. Gleason emphasized the potential for stormwater runoff to affect the existing wetlands.

Commissioners said the full development application will address construction and development details, allowing for additional public input. The wetlands permit applies only to lands zoned public, but future development may include lands currently zoned as open space.

“All of the main airport activity—which is zoned public—does not occur on any of the ancillary open space zone properties,” Huebner said. “So the wetlands part is all on public. It’s perhaps some of the rest of the project which is on open space, which we’ll address with the rest of the development application when that comes forward.”

Commissioners passed the wetlands permit, ensuring further opportunities for public comment when the development permit is submitted.

Telluride Regional Airport is known as the highest commercial airport in North America, with an average of 26 flights per day.

West End Roundup with The San Miguel Basin Forum

Today on the West End Roundup with the San Miguel Basin Forum, KOTO’s news team chats with editor Regan Tuttle. Mike Lee, R-Utah. “The truth is that federal land is a massive underutilized asset. And local communities in the West are often those that pay the highest price for federal inaction in this area.”

Lee, who chairs the committee, spoke to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who expressed agreement.

“We’ve got a lot of value trapped in land, particularly bordering our fast-growing metro areas,” Burgum said. “We did a study of all these federal lands, and there’s 250,000 acres that’s within just a few miles of cities of 5,000 or more. And again, in states like Idaho, Utah and Nevada, where we have a high percentage of federal land—it’s a great opportunity to help by being smart on a case-by-case basis and moving forward with projects that help communities and help our states.”

A similar proposal in the House last month was rejected by a bipartisan group.

The Senate bill would instruct the secretaries of Interior and Agriculture to dispose of 0.5% to 0.75% of all Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service lands. According to an analysis by the Center for Biological Diversity, many of the lands near cities contain vital wildlife habitat—including BLM-designated critical habitat for the Gunnison sage grouse outside Gunnison. Though Forest Service lands were not included in the analysis, similar concerns exist near protected wilderness areas and Canada lynx habitat outside Telluride.

“Mr. Secretary, when you were going through the confirmation process, I believed you would be a responsible steward of our public lands—conservative, of course, but responsible,” said Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M. “We’re never going to agree on everything, but I thought that we could agree that our public lands are the greatest heritage of our nation and we have a responsibility to hand them down to the next generation well stewarded. This budget request will not resource your department to responsibly steward our lands and waters.”

The proposal also includes billions of dollars in cuts to land management agency budgets.

“The 2026 budget for the Department features strategic investments to further President Trump’s commitment to energy dominance, which is the foundation of American prosperity, national security and world peace,” Burgum said.

Heinrich countered that budget cuts would reduce services on public lands—including visitor center staffing, educational programming and facility maintenance.

Telluride Food and Vine Festival

The Telluride Food and Vine Festival returns this weekend, offering fine cuisine and wine pairings at venues in Telluride and Mountain Village.

Join the festival Friday, June 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Elks Park for “Butt, Legs and Sides”—a culinary evening featuring fried chicken, Southern sides and champagne.
