The warning is currently in effect for Monday evening, and again for Tuesday afternoon and evening.

In San Miguel County, Susan Lilly, public information officer for the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office and Telluride Fire Protection District, says conditions aren’t dire, but people should use common sense.

“The reality is it’s not all that dry. We have plenty of green in the area. Certainly, that can dry up as temperatures stay high, but right now we’re not on the most severe alert we have,” said Lilly. “That being said, we all need to exercise common sense.”

As the Bluegrass weekend kicks off, Lilly emphasized the importance of recreating safely.

“We have nearly 90% of wildfires are caused by humans, and one of the most common ways is a campfire,” she said.

Lilly advised campers and recreators to choose their fire spots wisely—ideally in a designated area—and to keep fires small. Most importantly, she said, make sure the fire is fully extinguished.

“Don’t go to bed when it’s not fully out. Pour water on it, stir it, don’t just pour it on the coals,” Lilly urged. “Make sure it’s out by touching your hand on those coals and making sure it’s cool to the touch.”

She also reminded individuals to dispose of cigarette butts properly.

“Not flick them out the window, put them on the ground (even if you stomp them out), that’s a great way to start a fire,” said Lilly.

At the heart of it all, Lilly urged everyone to follow the mantra of Smokey Bear.

“We just want everyone to exercise common sense, no matter what the fire danger is—it always applies,” said Lilly. “Be careful with campfires, extinguish them correctly, and don’t be that person who starts a wildfire by accident.”

The Red Flag Warning in San Miguel County remains in effect until 8 p.m. Monday, and from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday. The Chamber is led by a board of six local residents working to promote tourism and support businesses in the Norwood R-2 School District.

Becky Hannigan, a board member and the deputy clerk for the Town of Norwood, shared an update with the San Miguel County Lodging Tax Panel about the Chamber’s recent activities.

“We’re trying to, as a Chamber—because we only have six members on the board currently—we wanted to concentrate on things that we could help our businesses with here in town but still bring people to Norwood for these events,” Hannigan said. “Like helping with Music on the Mesas as far as sponsorship. But not go crazy to try and figure out what everybody wants—we had to kind of bring it in just a little bit.”

Norwood was recently named a Certified Small Business Community and is now part of Colorado’s 126 designated “Opportunity Zones,” which offer federal tax incentives for investors interested in rural development.

Hannigan said the Chamber has been active this year, collaborating with local groups and hosting events, including the annual banquet in mid-March.

“It was a highly successful event,” she said.

The Chamber is also organizing events throughout the summer.

“So the other thing the Chamber has taken on is the Fourth Friday Films,” Hannigan said. “It’s a free film series at the Norwood Town Park. It is, of course, the fourth Friday of the month. We’re not doing it in July due to the fair and rodeo.”

The next Fourth Friday film is scheduled for June 27—a showing of The Sandlot at the town park. The following day is Norwood’s Star Spangled Parade, with local vendors and food provided by the fire department.

“Yeah, so we kind of decided to concentrate on a few certain things,” Hannigan said. “Of course, we’re helping Music on the Mesa. The Chamber helps sponsor the sound system for both of those. So we’re trying to stay in collaboration with all the things going on in Norwood. With parks and rec, we’re doing collaborations with them as well. So that’s what we’ve decided to do—just keep it local, bring some more local people in, and let’s just get crazy.”

In addition to Hannigan’s presentation, the county lodging tax panel approved another year of funding for the Chamber at its June 16 meeting. The Chamber receives approximately $15,000 annually from the lodging tax.

Managing Menopause

Gretchen Williams wants to open the conversation around perimenopause and menopause.

“When people find out that other people are experiencing similar things to what they’re experiencing, it reduces, maybe not the intensity of the symptoms, but the shame surrounding them, the loneliness surrounding them,” Williams said.

Williams is a licensed professional counselor candidate, a yoga teacher and bodyworker.

This summer, she’s facilitating a Peri/Menopause Series: Understanding Hormone Replacement Therapy, and navigating hormonal shifts with integrative interventions.

“What we’re finding in research is that hormones, particularly estrogen, protect women’s bodies and brains from things like dementia and Alzheimer’s, breast cancer, bone cancer, osteoporosis, and a slew of other pretty serious things,” she said.

The two-part series will feature nurses from the region to share information on what hormone replacement therapy is and how women can navigate the shifts in their bodies.

“The suicide rate for women is the highest during this time of life, which is really unfortunate, and anxiety and depression really pop their head up for a lot of people, and relationship quality also plummets,” Williams said. “So, it’s good to be armed with information so you know what’s happening with you, first of all, reducing some shame and guilt, there’s nothing wrong with you, this is just a natural thing in life, but there are things you can do.”

Williams said the goal is to help women—and men—move through the world with a little more ease.

“You don’t feel so great when you haven’t slept all night because you’re waking up with hot flashes or your sleep quality has plummeted,” she said. “If you’re in a relationship with somebody, or you’re working with other people, and your mood is really up and down like a roller coaster—which it can be in perimenopause when your hormones are fluctuating so greatly and it’s new to you—it’s helpful to know there’s a reason behind it and something can be done and you’re not just stuck with suffering all the time. We can’t change the onslaught of perimenopause and menopause, but we can get through it in a better way.”

The Peri/Menopause Series will take place Sunday, June 22, and Sunday, July 13, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Wilkinson Public Library.

High-Country Jeep Roads Begin to Open in San Juans

High-country passes are slowly opening around the San Juans as road crews clear remaining snow. Ouray, San Juan and San Miguel counties have started seasonal work on popular jeep roads.

Ouray County recently reopened Camp Bird Road up to Imogene Pass after extensive repairs. Imogene Pass remains closed on the San Miguel County side, with a full closure into Telluride expected throughout the summer due to ongoing maintenance.

Black Bear Pass and Ophir Pass remain closed while road and bridge crews continue snow removal. In Silverton, Animas Forks Road through Cinnamon Pass is open.

Updated road conditions are available at each county website under Road and Bridge.

Make Your Own Hula Hoop at Wilkinson Library Workshop

Ever wish you had your own custom hula hoop? Molly, originally from Montana, carried a sign that read “Democracy not Dictatorship.”

“I’m here today because Trump is destroying our democracy and not respecting our constitution, and a lot of people in our environment are getting hurt by it,” she said.

In Longmont, large crowds lined both sides of Main Street for several blocks. Protesters held signs denouncing cuts to Medicaid, efforts to sell off public land and what they called threats to democracy.

Nancy, from Longmont, said showing up was important.

“Silence is complicit. I mean, we need to just at least voice our concern that we’re not happy with all the decisions the Trump administration’s been making,” she said.

Similar rallies took place in Grand Junction, Montrose and Telluride. The so-called “No Kings” rallies were the largest mass protest the state has seen in years.

– Fire Season Heats Up

– Norwood Chamber Plans Busy Summer of Events and Community Partnerships

– Managing Menopause

[515
300,925,632,477
post-5313","news","type-news","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","news-category-newscasts","news-tag-colorado","news-tag-menopause","news-tag-san-miguel-county","news-tag-telluride

Newscast 6-16-25 - KOTO FM

<meta name="description" content="In Today's Headlines: Fire Season Heats Up.
