Richard Udd was found in his home late Sunday night.

Mountain Village Police and Mountain Village Ambulance responded to the residence, but efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. He was 83 years old.

According to the San Miguel County Coroner’s Office, Udd was a vital piece of Raytheon Technologies, specializing in missile defense. He was also a car enthusiast who organized the Cedaredge car show every year. An avid skier and hiker, Udd loved Telluride and had plans to ski until he was 90.

The cause and manner of death remain under investigation. Tayler Funeral Home is handling services.

Udd is survived by his sisters, Claudia, Kathryn and Kris; his daughters, Pam, Mandy and Terri; and his fiancée, Karen.

Tesla Cybertruck Burns in Redvale

There was a smoky musk in the air outside Redvale this weekend.

The Norwood Fire Protection District was alerted to a possible wildland fire on Sunday afternoon around 1 p.m.

“There was a vehicle on fire and some type of farm equipment on fire and was communicating to the vegetation that was nearby and spreading quickly,” said John Bockrath, fire chief for the Norwood Fire Protection District.

“My first crews on scene announced it was a Cybertruck that was fully involved and a woodchipper that was also partially involved at that time.”

Bockrath noted the fire had spread from the vehicles into the grass and sagebrush and had gotten into the piñon and juniper. He said crews began actively fighting that portion of the fire.

“The vehicles were a total loss,” he said.

Approximately 30 emergency personnel responded to the fire with 12 fire vehicles. Responders included the Norwood Fire Protection District, Nucla-Naturita Fire, Paradox Fire, the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and sheriff’s deputies from San Miguel and Montrose counties.

“After approximately two hours the fire was under control. We did keep personnel on scene until 11 o’clock last night, and we did go out and check again this morning,” Bockrath said.

In total, the fire burned just over half an acre. While responders were, thankfully, able to contain the fire before it grew, Bockrath expressed his appreciation for everyone who responded.

“The last thing we want is to lose a structure, lose critical infrastructure services, and most importantly we don’t want to lose any lives. So, if the resources are available, I call everybody in. I’d rather return people than be asking for more help.”

Bockrath said the case is still under investigation and the cause has not yet been determined. However, he was able to locate the point of origin.

“I will say it is close to the Cybertruck. However, I cannot make a determination on how it exactly started.”

Bockrath added he’s been in contact with Tesla about the investigation.

With fire season fully underway and several fires already burning in the West End, Bockrath emphasized the importance of awareness.

“Please be very cognizant because it doesn’t take much. We are really getting into wildland season now. Things are picking up all across the country and we want to be safe.”

That means only building fires in designated campfire rings and ensuring they are completely out to the touch. It also includes being mindful about extinguishing cigarette butts and making sure chains are secure on RVs and trailers.

Mining Land Use Codes Move Forward

San Miguel County is one step closer to a comprehensive land use code update to regulate the impacts of mining activities. After a six-month public comment and review process, the County Planning Commission recommended the code update to the Board of County Commissioners on Thursday, June 26.

The code update expands mining regulations from a few pages to more than 55. County Planning Director Kaye Simonson said the goal is to mitigate the impacts of proposed mining activity.

“Every property is different, every project design is different,” Simonson said. “It is possible to design a multitude of projects on the same property and have different impacts on each of them. And that’s why we can’t be that black and white in this. Because we don’t know what’s going to be presented to us.”

The commission has reviewed several drafts of the proposed changes, incorporating feedback from residents and from state and federal agencies that manage mining in Colorado.

Most mining in San Miguel County occurs on federal public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety also has jurisdiction over hardrock mining operations.

Planning staff collaborated with land use attorney Torie Jarvis, who presented amendments influenced by public input. Among the most notable additions is a waiver process, which would allow some application requirements to be waived if there is no “economically or technically feasible option” for the project.

Planning Commissioner Hallie Simpson expressed concern over the potential impacts of that waiver language.

“I guess my concern here would be we say, ‘Oh, I can’t do my mining operations because I’m within the 200-foot perimeter from a wetland.’ Isn’t that the goal?” Simpson said. “We don’t want mining operations to impact wetlands, so why would we create a waiver, for example, to allow mining operations within 200 feet of a wetland? In my mind, to some extent we’re creating more vagueness and more ability to be accused of being arbitrary.”

Simpson added that the broader aim is to find a middle ground among various interest groups.

“We’re just trying to balance interest groups,” she said. “So on one hand you have the applicant say, ‘Please waive this,’ and you have Sheep Mountain Alliance saying, ‘No, we don’t want mining near a wetland,’ or ‘We don’t want this offset because X, Y, Z.’”

Planning Commission Chair Lee Taylor acknowledged that the formality of the process has made consensus more difficult.

“Now I will confess that in the last three years that I have been in this chair, we have wrestled with the constructs and the constrictions on our process that make it hard to go have a beer and talk this out and come to a workable understanding,” Taylor said. “We may not agree on all the different points, but from a process standpoint, the lawyers will tell you you really can’t do that type of thing anymore, and it’s hard to make that work.”

The Planning Commission recommended the updated land use code, including amendments related to waivers and setback requirements, while noting the Board of County Commissioners may propose further revisions. An updated draft will be posted on the county planning website. The public comment window remains open, though no meeting date has been set for the commissioners to consider final approval.

G is for Government Previews Telluride Town Council

Telluride Town Council is meeting on Tuesday with a state of the town address, goats on the Valley Floor, and a community survey on the docket. Mike Lee issued a statement late Saturday night saying he would withdraw the provision. He said he couldn’t guarantee that federal lands would not be sold to corporations like BlackRock and foreign countries such as China.

Steve Bloch, legal director of the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, said the provision’s withdrawal shows that Republicans will cave to public pressure and backlash.

“I don’t think people felt that was possible. They felt there would be some version of it that would pass with the Republicans holding all of the levers of power. And what we saw is that the voice of everyday Americans, of hunters and anglers and recreationists and small business owners matter,” Bloch said.

In his statement, Lee said he still believes the federal government owns far too much land and that much of it is being mismanaged. Bloch said they expect Lee to continue pushing the sale of federal land in some way, shape or form — and that the Trump administration will go after national monuments next.

Weiser Warns of Supreme Court Ruling Implications

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser is warning about the potential implications of Friday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling that sharply limits the use of nationwide injunctions.

Weiser said plaintiffs only ask courts to block laws and executive orders across all states when it’s necessary for the United States to have a consistent policy.

“So this is not something we try to do in every single case,” Weiser said. “It’s something that happens in particular cases, like the one we’re talking about now, where, without a universal injunction, the consequences are going to be chaotic, severe and people are really going to be harmed.”

Colorado is part of the lawsuit against President Trump’s order ending birthright citizenship.
