It’s fair week, and for many kids across the West End, it’s the culmination of months of work raising animals through the 4-H program. Turkeys, goats, pigs, chickens, ducks and more wait for their time to shine.

In the center of the fairgrounds is an ongoing chicken competition. Up next: rabbits. Caleb Lee, of Olathe, is this year’s rabbit judge.

“So there’s lots of things that go into a good rabbit,” said Lee. “You have to like the type, so good body condition, hair condition, look for disqualification like broken toenails or discolored toenails, spotted colors that don’t match the pattern of the animal. Along with eye color, ears — all rabbits have a tattoo in the left ear — and you check for broken bones or broken tail, which also makes for a disqualification.”

Lee said for him, it’s about giving back.

“It’s the community that raised me,” he said. “I was in 4-H for 10 years, so I just like giving back to the kids, watching the kids grow. This is my second year here, and I’ve already seen these kids a couple times — or at least a few of them — and it’s kind of cool watching them grow into young adults to better our community.”

Kids and parents attend to their animals — grooming, cleaning and feeding them. Throughout the week, market and showmanship competitions are held for each species.

Illy, who owns two male lambs named Frosty and Snowman, began raising them in May. She explained the difference between the two competition types.

“Market and showmanship — market, they look for how good your muscle is, your meat, your structure,” she said. “Showmanship is whether you can handle your animal.”

Illy, like Cannon Sherman, who raised two broad-breasted turkeys for the show, said months of grooming, feeding, walking and socializing the animals is required. Sherman stood beside his turkeys and said he’s confident after all his hard work.

“I would like to go into welding and fabrication,” he said. “And as a side project, I do like raising turkeys, so might raise them as a side project because you can make good money if you raise turkeys.”

Part of the program includes a public auction of the animals raised through 4-H. Makayla Gordon, president of the Basin Fair, said animals often sell well above market prices.

“It’s a huge deal — for most of them, it’s how they get back everything they put into their project,” said Gordon. “They normally sell well above market values. So our larger steers and hogs, lambs, they can go for $10,000 to $15,000 apiece. Typically, when you take it over to the sale barn, they may be closer to $4,000. So well over market value — but more importantly, it’s an exciting opportunity for these kids to get out into the public and invite the public to come in and buy their animal. They get to learn some more hands-on skills with that — public speaking, asking the hard questions, taking the no’s and waiting for the next yes.”

Gordon announced winners of the chicken showmanship contest while tending to those up next. She said the 4-H program teaches more than animal husbandry.

“A lot of different things — responsibility is a huge one, of course, integrity, teaching these kids that once they start something, it’s important to follow through with it,” she said. “Teamwork has been a big thing. So fair isn’t necessarily — as much as it’s individualized projects — for the kids, it’s about helping each other out and supporting each other and making sure that we’re successful all together.”

Along the side of the fairgrounds are cows, perfectly groomed and relaxing in beds of hay. Gordon said some of the larger animals are part of herds that kids have raised over years.

“One of my favorite things, though, is our breeding programs,” said Gordon. “So we currently have a breeding program in all large animal species — beef, goat, hogs and lambs — and that one is a really cool one because typically these kids will bring in a breeding project one year, and then they bring in the baby the next year. And they continue to bring that in. There’s been quite a few kids that have started their own herds out of this project and have been able to grow into multiple animals already just through their work at 4-H.”

And of course, just outside under the shade, lay hogs in the “Pig Palace.” While it may have seemed like naptime, the pigs stirred at the occasional passerby walking in and out of the San Miguel Basin Fair.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Flies into Telluride

Kids have taken over the Historic Sheridan Opera House — memorizing lines, rehearsing scenes and trying on exquisite costumes. Rehearsal for the Young People’s Theater annual summer spectacular is underway.

“Yes, totally impossible if we carry on like this. My children are up there in chains, and so is your country. And what are we doing here? Squabbling over scraps. We need a plan. Gather around, everyone!”

“My name is Simon, and I am 12 years old.”

Starting Monday, 24 kids, ages 8 to 14, had five days to learn, rehearse and perform a musical. On Friday, July 25, they will present Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The excitement in the air is tangible as the kids prepare for opening night.

“Hi, I’m Mary, and I’m playing the grandma,” said one young actor. When asked what her favorite part of theater camp was, she added, “Everything. I love theater camp. It’s my favorite thing in the whole world.”

“My name’s Itzel, I’m 13, and I’m playing Boris, the spy,” said another camper. “It’s so fun being here. It’s also like my favorite thing ever, kind of like Mary said.” When asked what makes it so fun, she responded, “Miss Leah. She’s such a good director, and like, she directs us so well and she makes everything so fun, and I love being here with all of my friends.”

The Young People’s Theater camp was started by Ronnie and Steve Palamar, executive director and president of the Sheridan Arts Foundation.

“The kids come in, they put their heads down, they work really hard, and they actually produce a little musical at the end of their week,” said Ronnie Palamar. “And we have that open to the public so everybody can come out and see how talented these kids are and what they can produce in five short days.”

“What I see is the camaraderie they create,” she added. “Some of these kids are coming in from another state, they don’t know any of these kids, this is really brave for them to make new friends. And that’s what I see. And they all seem really happy, and because they all have one thing in common — they love to get on stage and perform.”

Though the kids have only been in camp for one week, they’ve already learned a lot.

“I’ve learned how to do a German accent, and I’ve learned how to kind of make the most of any role.”

“Emphasizing your lines and belting more, and just putting more ‘oomph’ into your lines.”

“That I need to project and that I need to be brave.”

“If you can see the people in the audience, they can see you.”

“One thing that I’ve learned is to always have like really big energy when you’re onstage. And even when you’re not really talking or having lines, always use your facial expressions and be reacting to others around you.”

“My name’s Stella, I’m 12, I play Jemima.”

With dress rehearsals today and tomorrow, the kids are nearly ready to perform Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for friends, family and theater lovers.

“You should come because we have a car onstage,” one young performer said.

After the two performances on Friday, the second week of the Young People’s Theater camp will take the stage, journeying from the North Pole to present Elf: The Musical.

Visit sheridanoperahouse.com to learn more.

West End Roundup With the San Miguel Basin Forum

Today on the West End Roundup with the San Miguel Basin forum KOTO’s news team chats with editor Regan Tuttle.
