At a recent meeting, Town Council got a mid-year update on meters and angled parking. K-O-T-O’s Julia Caulfield has more.

Story begins at 1:24

County Climate Action Continues Despite Federal Funding Cuts

The county’s Climate Action Plan outlines a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 26% by 2025, 50% by 2030 and 100% by 2040 — all based on 2010 levels. Strategies include installing electric vehicle chargers, expanding composting programs, improving energy efficiency and investing in solar energy.

At the July 30 Board of County Commissioners meeting, Assistant County Manager Jarod Biggs and County Climate Resilience and Natural Resources Director Starr Jamison gave updates on the county’s efforts to electrify its vehicle fleet.

“So conceptually, we were currently leasing some vehicles,” Biggs said. “When we turn over a lease … we would substitute an electronic vehicle, so we’d be continuing to pay the same lease expenses or adjusted lease expenses out of our general fund. We also are making sure that we’re having conversations about what tax rebates or payments are also available … There are a number of those rebates that vanish in October.”

Both Biggs and Jamison said the Trump administration’s rollback of federal rebate and grant programs for EVs and energy upgrades has made local planning more urgent. Jamison noted that “some programs … no longer have websites.”

Jamison also announced that EV chargers at county buildings are expected to be installed this fall and that employees will soon have access to free SMART bus passes.

“So then we have bus passes for staff … we are doing an August commuting challenge,” Jamison said. “They’re paying for bus passes for employees, and we’ve already got, I think, eight employees that are going to take advantage of this one week of commuting via the SMART bus to help decrease our greenhouse gas emissions and vehicle miles traveled.”

The plan also includes support for e-bike purchases.

“We had an employee come to us, so we are going to finance [e-bikes] like we do our ski passes,” Jamison said. “So I’m working on that project too, to help staff get e-bikes.”

Local nonprofit EcoAction Partners helped develop the county’s Climate Action Plan. Their EV Readiness Initiative aims to improve regional charging infrastructure and transition government fleet vehicles to electric.

“I want to stay on top of the grants before we lose them,” Jamison said. “I’m trying to prioritize that — the money that’s available now before it goes away.”

Under President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” the $7,500 federal electric vehicle tax credit was eliminated. Most of the associated cuts will begin to take effect at the end of September.

Tasmanian Poets Featured in August Bardic Trails Event

Tasmanian poets David Mason and Cally Conan-Davies will headline the Bardic Trails virtual poetry series Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 7 p.m. MDT.
Hosted by the Telluride Institute’s Talking Gourds Poetry Program, Bardic Trails is held the first Tuesday of each month via Zoom. Evacuation notices have been lifted for nearby residents. The North Rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park reopened Wednesday, July 30. The South Rim remains closed.

Mountainfilm Offers Virtual Encore Screening Series

Mountainfilm’s “After the Fest” virtual screening series runs Aug. 5–14, offering three audience-favorite films from the 2025 festival.
Viewers can stream each film for $20, with proceeds supporting filmmakers and Mountainfilm’s nonprofit mission.
