The fire was originally reported by the San Juan National Forest on July 28th, in what was a small ¼ acre fire in steep and rough terrain. At that time firefighters used a helicopter to survey the area and dropped nearly 7,000 gallons of water for suppression. On August 5th, the small fire had grown to over 100 acres, prompting further firefighting operations.

Lorena Williams is the Public Information Officer for the incident management team, Williams says the fire is exhibiting extreme behavior,

“No firefighters are on the ground on this fire. It’s exhibiting extreme fire behavior, making dangerous single and group torching runs in really heavy, like I said, really heavy, dead and down spruce and fir. There’s no ability for a fire crew to dig line in terrain like this. When we think about engaging a fire with a fire crew on the ground, you’re thinking of them, you know, digging out vegetation down to mineral soil to keep the fire from progressing. Well, not only is this fire the forest floor covered in dead and down logs, it’s extremely inaccessible. It’s miles for firefighters to even hike to to get to, and then the fire is exhibiting extreme fire behavior, and it’s far too dangerous. You can’t put a firefighter up against two and 300 foot flame lengths, right? This is where we have to start looking at aviation assets as the primary method of engaging a fire like this. Now, because the fire is burning in such remote territory with very few values at risk, no private in holdings, no private lands, no homes, no structures at risk. We’re not going to put firefighters on the ground and put them at risk when there are no values immediately threatened.”

Williams says fire modeling indicates that the fire will move east, and impacts to local communities and highway 145 is limited—the largest impact will be smoke.

“the primary impact to the public in the coming days isn’t going to be the fire. It’s going to be smoke, and Smoke will settle in the evenings. It’s going to blow to the north and east. It’s going to impact Durango and Telluride and other surrounding communities that direction. So we do expect that fire to grow and for smoke to affect the public, and so understanding how to take care of yourself when there’s heavy smoke in the area is really important. And the CDC and our partners at Fire Adapted Colorado and Colorado State Forest Service have great products out on how to keep yourself safe when there’s a lot of wildfire smoke in the air,”

Dolores County has issued an evacuation order for San Juan National Forest lands on Stoner and Taylor Mesa. This includes Stoner Mesa Road (FS Road 686), Taylor Mesa Road (FS Road 545) as well as all roads branching off, Mavreeso Campground, Burro Bridge Campground, and West Dolores Campground.

Williams says San Juan National Forest is implementing Stage 2 fire restrictions this Friday at midnight. The weather forecast means continued hot and dry conditions,

“because we have had an extended hot dry period, fuels are have very low fuel moisture. Trees are dry. Grass is dry. These fuels are available to burn, and so the weather outlook is not favorable for keeping fires small. So our main message to the public is that they are not a factor in wildfires, meaning they’re not starting wildfires through, you know, accidents or by having illegal campfires, because at this point, wildfires are exhibiting explosive growth and they’re exhibiting extreme fire behavior.”

Updated information on the Stoner Mesa Fire can be found at inciweb.wildfire.gov, or through the San Juan National Forest Facebook page.

Telluride Moves Forward With Southwest Development

The Town of Telluride is planning for major development in the Southwest part of town. Town Council recently got an in-progress update on the plans. K-O-T-O’s Julia Caulfield has more.

Story begins at 4:39

New Snow Telemetry Site in Alta Lakes

All across the West, data is being gathered from small weather stations tucked into the mountains. They’re called SNOTEL sites, which stands for snow telemetry—a program operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

“So SNOTEL stands for snow telemetry, and it is an automated data collection site, particularly for hydro meteorologic conditions, that monitor those conditions every hour and report that information back through telemetry means in near real time, so we know what conditions are on an hourly basis,” said Brian Domonkos, a hydrologist with the NRCS and supervisor of the Colorado Snow Survey Program. “The importance initially started off pertaining mainly to agricultural water supply. But over the years, the importance of SNOTEL has really expanded beyond agriculture. While agriculture is still our primary purpose, the utilities are vast, and there’s many other applications of the data and information.”

Domonkos and his team are installing a new SNOTEL site in Alta Lakes, part of a network of automated stations providing invaluable climate data, some of which dates back to the 1930s.

“So the program itself, most particularly as it’s been funded by the federal government, has been around since the mid-1930s,” Domonkos said. “Now, the SNOTEL—or the automated data collection network—has been around since the late ’70s, early ’80s is when the initial sites were installed. It was mainly a supplement, at first, to the snow course network, which is a manual means of measuring the snowpack. But the SNOTEL has really taken off as the primary means of measuring the snow resource in the mountains of the western United States.”

Sites across the San Juans collect data on snow water equivalent, temperature, soil moisture and relative humidity. Domonkos said each new installation adds long-term value.

“So with every site that we install, we hope that it’s going to be around into perpetuity, and we can use that information and that steady, consistent measurement each and every month and year to provide us a relatively similarly oriented and long-term data record,” he said.

The Alta Lakes station is replacing a SNOTEL site in Telluride that dates back nearly a century. Domonkos said the updated site will offer clearer, more accurate data. Installation takes just a few days.

“It is a fair amount of work, but with the right number of staff and people who know how to do it and cooperating weather, it can take about three days, three to four days at most, if everything goes well,” he said. “And so we install the entire site relatively quickly, and then it should be reporting, providing the information, the data that it collects, is what I mean by reporting. It should be reporting by about the time we leave, and the data should be available within a week or two, as long as we’re able to fully enable the site from a database and managing standpoint in our databases and systems.”

SNOTEL data is used across agencies for hydrologic modeling, agriculture, and long-term climate research. Domonkos said it’s gratifying to help build a dataset that informs how we understand change over time.

Some Question President Trump’s Environmental Agenda

The Trump administration has expedited several projects in our region under the executive order declaring a “national energy emergency.”But as Rocky Mountain Community Radio’s Caroline Llanes reports, some are questioning whether this was an actual emergency, or a tactic to limit public involvement.

Story begins at 13:40

Breckenridge Trail Gets Upgrade and New Loop in $50K Collaborative Project

A major trail improvement project is underway in San Miguel County as the Breckenridge Trail—formerly known as Penelope’s—is set for upgrades and a new loop extension.

The project is a joint effort between San Miguel County, the Aldasoro Ranch Homeowners Company, and the Telluride Mountain Club. Work begins this week to reroute and reinforce the trail, improving drainage and reducing erosion after damage from last summer’s heavy rains. A portion of the old trail also crossed private land without permission, prompting a new push for formal easements and long-term access.

Telluride Mountain Club Trails Director Jordan Carr said the improvements aim to enhance sustainability and the experience for both hikers and mountain bikers. The trail is a key seasonal route on Deep Creek Mesa, known to melt out early in spring and stay accessible into late fall.

Construction will take about three weeks. Trail users are asked to avoid the area for safety.

The $50,000 project cost and ongoing maintenance will be split equally among the three partners.

Answers to Unclaimed Property in the State of Colorado

There’s a vault at the State Capitol that’s packed with lost treasures belonging to generations of Coloradans.
