Their message: the wildfire is in complex and difficult terrain.

“I tell you I have a lot of guys with decades of experience and come back to me and tell me you have a rough country out there,” said U.S. Forest Service Dolores District Ranger Nick Mustoe. “And this is folks that aren’t surprised by seeing rough country. They go around the country and internationally working on wildfires.”

Incident command officials said higher humidity and lower winds have allowed hotshot teams to establish fire lines and prepare a plan of attack if the fire attempts to move west over Stoner Creek.

For the first week, the fire doubled in size every day due to dense dead and standing conifer trees. Officials said the fire has since reached stands of healthy aspen, which has slowed its progress toward County Road 38.

Pat Seekins, lead incident commander for San Juan Team 8, said a more complex incident team has been ordered to provide additional on-the-ground capacity.

“It’s going to be challenging and it’s going to likely be on the landscape for quite a while,” Seekins said. “So as we continue, it’s just going to maintain the importance of relationships, the key communication and what we strive to do is be proactive not reactive.”

Dolores County Sheriff Don Wilson stressed the importance of readiness.

“So today I spoke with Sheriff Covault and Sheriff Nowlin,” Wilson said. “We do have a way of making sure if we have to evacuate you we can send you either direction. So if you want to go to Telluride, we’ll have Telluride set up, and Sheriff Covault will have that set up for us. Sheriff Nowlin said the same, we just have to give them time. So time is not 5 seconds, it means it’s going to take about 2 hours for us to get everything set up.”

Wilson said both Telluride and Montezuma County evacuation centers can hold about 50 to 60 people. He acknowledged that some Rico residents may prefer to go toward Telluride because they work there.

Montezuma County Sheriff Steve Nowlin said he personally called every resident along Highway 145 in the evacuation area.

“The most important thing is being ready to evacuate if you need to,” Nowlin said. “Don’t leave until the evacuation notice comes out. You should be ready to go. So have a pre-plan already. Plan on what you’re going to do with whatever vehicles, livestock, animals, things like that. We can assist with those evacuation locations.”

As the sun set, an orange glow filled the Rico Firehouse. Air quality in Rico has been impacted by the Stoner Mesa Fire, though officials say less wind and higher humidity in the coming days may improve conditions.

“So right now Rico is sitting really well,” said Incident Command Operations Manager Brad Pietruska. “With the weather forecast, with the change in fuels that’s out there and with seriously diminished fire behavior. Even through the past several red flag days.”

The last major wildfire in the Rico area was the 2018 Burro Fire. Wilson said Rico has never been evacuated due to a wildfire.

“You’re all going to be OK,” Nowlin told residents. “I’m telling you that because I’m going to be there with you, all right? So we’ll make sure that everybody is fine.”

Further information on the Stoner Mesa Fire is available at inciweb.wildfire.gov or on the Stoner Mesa Fire Information Facebook page.

Council Previews New Gondola Station

The Telluride Gondola Plaza and Station project is one step closer to becoming reality after the Town Council received a final design draft Tuesday following nearly six months of community and stakeholder outreach.

Allison Cote of Design Workshop presented the preferred alternative plan, which blends community feedback to include increased modalities in the plaza and improved transit access along San Juan Avenue.

“And what we heard from all of you is that this portal to Telluride, right, that big idea we had is really important, and that this needs to be grounded in the community’s vibe,” Cote said. “Overall, there was a support for this idea of a second-level terrace … but we don’t want it to feel like a sky bridge. So really feeling is that it’s one building facade and really connected, rather than two separate spaces. There was, overall, overwhelmingly from council and the community, a preference for a street-level gondola and ensuring that that’s a covered space that is safe and comfortable for accessing that really important transit connection. The other thing that was really critical is the idea that San Juan Avenue has an improved transit drop-off area for buses, for personal vehicle drop-off, and that that is really seamless with the connection to the gondola.”

The final design includes street-level gondola access, a second building for food and beverage businesses or community space, and a second-story terrace that connects to the main gondola building. Cote said increased transit access will allow for better connectivity for buses and cars to drop off passengers and will include enough space for up to 400 queuing gondola riders. The existing lawn for Chair 7 and year-round events will remain.

“All of that will get wrapped into a final deliverable, a package that will be shared with the town and with all of you,” Cote said. “And we’re really excited to present that final to you on Sept. 9, to kind of complete this phase of work and look to work with the town as to where to move this concept in the future.”

Councilmembers were generally supportive. Councilman Dan Enright pushed for more bike parking.

“My biggest comment, really, is … I think we are under accounting the amount of bike parking we need,” Enright said. “Still 21 spots, I think, is what was said here. I’m looking at it, and that just … I think that’s less than what we currently have. And especially if we’re increasing our programming and the usage of this area, that needs to be substantially increased.”

Other councilmembers echoed the call for more multi-modal use of the planned ski lockers, a feature that may see limited year-round use.

Councilwoman Elena Levin emphasized maintaining public spaces.

“I also want to make sure that we’re creating open public spaces that do not require someone spending money to feel like they can use them,” Levin said. “Even if this technically isn’t … private like rented space from the food and Bev establishments, the way that it looks makes it feel like you would have to go in and buy something in order to use some of those spaces.”

Consultants are meeting with Telluride Ski and Golf, the Parks and Recreation Commission, and other stakeholders before the final design presentation to Town Council on Sept. 9.

It’s A New Apres Nova

Telluride’s own jazz house band, Après Nova, is out with a new album – Nueva Nova.
