This summer, Telski announced it would be taking over management of the program.

The Town of Mountain Village provides its employees a wellness benefit to cover the cost of a merchant pass. This year, Mountain Village Town Council is making the decision to increase that wellness benefit to cover the cost of a regular season pass at $2,200.

“Fortunately, Council has a deep understanding of how important the merchant pass program is to employees, the value that our employees put on that program and the pass itself,” Wisor said. “Council, frankly, has a tremendous value in our employees and deeply appreciates the tremendous amount of work they do for our community, but the resort as well.”

Wisor said the increased cost to the town of Mountain Village will be approximately $146,000.

According to Wisor, the rationale given for cutting the program was due to concern about visitation numbers and a strained relationship with the government.

Wisor said he doesn’t believe cutting the merchant pass is the most effective way to assist with visitation numbers.

“Mountain Village’s employees directly work for and benefit the resort in so many different ways, at no direct cost to the resort,” he said. “I can think of a lot of better ways that the resort could be addressing visitation issues rather than cutting a program for so many people who work so hard on their behalf — not least of which include the folks who work on the gondola. The people that directly serve the busiest lift on the mountain will not be receiving a merchant pass, which is unfortunate.”

When it comes to a strained relationship between the entities, Wisor said he understands “there’s some frustration at the moment.”

“But I don’t see revoking the merchant pass from employees as helping that situation in any sort of way. So, I find the whole issue to be tremendously disappointing.”

Telski also revoked its merchant pass program from Town of Telluride employees. However, following a meeting where Telluride Town Council agreed to increase the wellness benefit for its employees to cover the cost of a ski pass, Telski owner Chuck Horning indicated he would restore the program for Telluride employees. However, a formal agreement has not been signed.

KOTO reached out to Telski for more information, but did not hear back by broadcast deadline.

Wisor said he has not heard from Telski about the program being reinstated for Mountain Village employees.

G is for Government Previews Telluride Town Council

Telluride Town Council is meeting on Tuesday with deed-restricted rental guidelines, construction updates, and ballot measure stances on the docket.

In this installment of G is for Government, Telluride Communications Manager Lindsey Mills steps in to share what to expect.

Story begins at 4:05.

Telluride Walks for Hope

On a damp, cool morning in September, nearly 50 members of the community marched down Main Street in Telluride with a loud and clear message: You are not alone.

“Hope and help are readily available for anyone who is struggling with suicide — whether it’s thinking about suicide, or lost someone to suicide,” said Megan Wise, Regional Health Connector for Tri-County Health Network.

“Hope and help are here, and we’re here as a community to get through it together.”

The march is part of the Walk for Hope — a community event held in honor of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. The event was hosted by Tri-County Health Network.

Jamie Hurst, Education and Awareness Programs Administrator at Tri-County Health Network and coordinator for the regional suicide prevention coalition, said the goal is to turn the traditional conversation around suicide on its head.

“Suicide — usually we talk about and think about it alone, in the darkness of our heads,” Hurst said. “Instead, we’re gathering in a beautiful park in a fall afternoon. Really just showing that this is something that doesn’t have to live in the darkness of your mind. It’s something that the community can be a part of, and support everyone in.”

The goal of the event is to build connection and awareness around suicide. Hurst said they want to help reduce the stigma.

“Just thinking about suicide doesn’t mean you’re going to go on to attempt suicide, or die by suicide,” Hurst said. “It’s a very common thing that we all can think of at certain times in our lives. It’s okay to think about it — it doesn’t mean you’re going to do it, or there’s something wrong with you. There are lots of people that think about suicide that never go on to attempt suicide, that continue to live healthy and productive lives way beyond the thought of suicide.”

“So, it really doesn’t need to be something that we can’t talk about, because the sooner that we can talk about it, the sooner we can get connected to supports that can lead us to recovery.”

After the march, the community gathered to light sparklers and hold a moment of silence.

“May we honor them with our light and our love,” Wise said. “May we also remember that those of us who are left behind are here in it together.
