There were so many things that I care about that were directly impacting my life and the lives of the people I care about,” she said. “I was really looking forward to engaging in conversations around our infrastructure and the gondola, the wastewater treatment, affordable housing. Things that really matter especially to our immigrant communities like wage theft and rights of our employees and season workers that are here and contribute to our community.”

While she’s sad to be ending her campaign, Marshalka said she’s also concerned about the tone of conversation around local politics and hopes to see a shift.

“I love the level of engagement we have in this community. I think that’s a primary reason why I live here,” she said. “At the same time, we have cast this spotlight onto council where we’re not always assuming best intentions of the folks who are sitting up who are trying to serve the community. I would love to be a part of changing that energy.”

Despite leaving the race, Marshalka said she plans to continue showing up in the community.

“I sit on a couple boards right now and I’m excited to keep going there. I love my job at 1-to-1. And I think there’s a couple other openings on different boards at the county level that I’m really curious about. I’m going to keep showing up.”

Marshalka also expressed gratitude for those who supported her campaign.

“I’ve received so much support that I wasn’t even expecting, and I think that’s a testament to the people who do show up for important conversations in our community,” she said. “I find myself sitting at the table and learning so much from the people around me.”

And voters may see her name on a future ballot.

“I would love for that to happen. I would be really excited if that was still an opportunity for me.”

Ballots have already been mailed out, and Marshalka’s name will still appear on them. However, according to Telluride Town Clerk Tiffany Kavanaugh, any vote she receives will not be counted.

With four seats open on Town Council and four candidates remaining—Kristen Permakoff, Dan Enright, Meehan Fee and Mindy Smith—each is guaranteed a seat.

KOTO News will hold a candidate forum with those running for Telluride Town Council on Tuesday, Oct. 14, from 6 to 7 p.m. Tune in to hear their thoughts and views on where the community is now and where it should be heading.

Telluride Foundation Looks to Make First Time Home Buying Less Intimidating

For many, the idea of buying a home for the first time can be daunting.

“Purchasing a home is a long, sometimes difficult and stressful journey,” said Elaine Demas, vice president of operations at the Telluride Foundation. “We are just trying to make sure that families that want to put down roots and stay here — hardworking members of our regional workforce — have all the tools that they need to make those decisions.”

This week, the Telluride Foundation is hosting a First-Time Homebuyer workshop to help provide information on the homebuying process for the community.

Demas said the idea for the event came in part from working with families through the foundation’s down payment assistance program.

“What we have learned from all of the families we’ve worked with who need help purchasing a home is that they also need help just understanding how to do it,” she said. “What’s out there, deed restrictions — what does that mean, how do I prepare for applying for my first mortgage, and what programs are out there that can help me with my down payment.”

At the workshop, the Telluride Foundation will share information on its down payment assistance program, as well as other financial resources.

Representatives from the towns of Telluride and Mountain Village, along with San Miguel County, will present during the event.

“[They] are going to share, not only the inventory of affordable houses that are out there, but also projects that are coming down the pike,” Demas said. “So, people understand that it might take a while for some of these projects to be approved and completed, but there is hope in the future.”

Danny Craft from Alpine Bank will also attend to offer information on mortgage preparation.

“Things like your credit score, your debt-to-income ratio — what does that mean, what do I do to set myself up for success?” Demas said. “We have a representative from the Telluride Association of Realtors who is going to talk about what it means to hire a real estate professional — do I need one? And what kind of services do they provide.”

Demas noted the goal of the workshop is to make homeownership feel a little less out of reach, while still being honest about the financial challenges of buying a home in the region.

“I think it’s important that people understand that purchasing a home also provides you with stability. Really, that’s what it’s all about,” she said. “Of course, you want to build equity and build wealth as well, but here in this community, with the affordable housing issues that we have — in terms of inventory — we’re trying to paint a realistic picture that is hopeful.”

The First-Time Homebuyers Path to Homeownership: Mountain Edition workshop will take place at the Wilkinson Public Library on Tuesday, Oct. 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. Registration is required and available at telluridelibrary.org.

This workshop is the first in a regional series, with future events planned in Nucla/Naturita, Ouray, and another session in Telluride in Spanish.

Telluride Historical Museum Brings Back Lamplight Cemetery Tours

The Telluride Historical Museum’s Lamplight Cemetery Tours are back just in time for spooky season. The museum invites the public to an evening walking tour of Lone Tree Cemetery, recounting Telluride’s history through the stories of the rugged people who lived, worked and were buried there.

From mining days and the Spanish flu to tales of Telluride’s immigrant families, the tour explores the area’s rich and sometimes eerie past.

The museum said the tours fill up quickly and registration is required, as space is limited. The Lamplight Cemetery Tours take place Friday, Oct. 17, and Friday, Oct. 24.

Heavy Rain Triggers Flooding, Evacuations in Southwest Colorado

Rain over the weekend brought flooding and evacuations to parts of Southwest Colorado. The storm system dumped 3 to 6 inches of rain in just two and a half days, prompting evacuations in La Plata County and Pagosa Springs.

Officials said around 400 homes were under evacuation orders in unincorporated La Plata County near Vallecito Creek, and roughly 50 homes were damaged by flooding.

National Weather Service officials say this amount of rain is rare for this time of year, noting Vallecito Creek peaked at 7,000 cubic feet per second — more than double the typical summer high of 3,000 cfs. The agency added that current moisture levels are 300% of normal for October.

County officials are warning residents that flooding could continue, with up to 3.5 more inches of rain expected in the coming days.

Cloud Seeding Company Eyes Colorado

A new kind of cloud seeding technology is coming to Weld County.
