He said they only became aware of the incident through community reports after the fact.

Chief Comte noted the Marshals did not assist or participate in the action, adding that they do not have verified information about the incident at this time.

He said the department’s priority remains the safety and well-being of all residents.

As immigration actions and raids occur across the country, Siddiqui said it is increasingly important for the local community to take a stand.

“It’s really important we come together as a community and see this as cruelty, and harm, and dehumanization against our whole community,” she said. “We are human beings. It doesn’t matter where we come from. It doesn’t matter what our background is, what language we speak. What we all have in common is we’re human beings. We’re all vulnerable to this.”

Siddiqui encouraged those who may not be directly impacted to take action and support neighbors.

“If you have extra free time, or you’re able to, [say] ‘I will accompany, I’ll go with you as a friend to the courthouse. I’ll pick your kids up from school, or take them to school. We can do a grocery run.’ All those things are really important,” she said.

She added that it is important to be the “eyes and ears of the community.”

“You see something, you have to say something,” Siddiqui said. “We have to understand this is an attack on all of us. If we’re really a community, it’s not enough to say you’re an ally. We have to be in solidarity with each other. Solidarity means: I will fight for your life as if it were my own. Really sit with that. Are you ready and prepared to do that?”

If someone sees what they believe may be the presence of ICE, Siddiqui urges them to call the Colorado Rapid Response Network — a 24-hour hotline that tracks, verifies, and confirms ICE raids across the state.

“You call them, you let them know ‘I have noticed some suspicious activity,’” she said. “If you have a photo, take a photo. You are allowed by Colorado law to take photos and videos — do it at a distance that is safe for you and what’s happening. Send those to them, and then right away the dispatch will contact the local team and they will come and verify. That’s what our team has done — they will go and verify what is happening. We immediately get this information out to the community so they know. This is what we can do — be aware of our surroundings.”

For Siddiqui, it comes down to community care.

“We’re going to be the ones. We’re going to be the ones who defend our community. We’re going to be the ones who keep each other safe. We’re going to be the ones who speak up,” she said.

Siddiqui encourages those in the community who want to become more involved to contact Tri-County Health Network.

To report suspected ICE activity in the region, contact the Colorado Rapid Response Network at (844) 864-8341.

Planning Commission Hears Mining Regulations–Again

The San Miguel County mining regulations were pushed back to the Planning Commission last week after County Commissioners raised concerns over the purpose of a waiver clause. After a year of drafts and public comment, a comprehensive land use code update for mining will take more time.

The Planning Department began working with the new regulations last year, compiling months of public comments and hearings. The goal is to mitigate the impacts of mining in the county. The process has drawn input from federal and state agencies, mining industry stakeholders and environmental groups.

Planning Commissioners met to focus on the waiver policy in the new regulations. The policy includes three types of waivers — one for application materials, another for approval standards or review criteria, and a possible appeal process for those decisions.

Planning Director Kaye Simonson said that while waivers of application materials exist in other parts of the land use code, waiving standards would be untested territory.

“Do you, the Planning Commission and the Board of County Commissioners, really want to cede your discretionary authority to the planning director?” Simonson said. “It makes me a little nervous. You know, I could see that situations arising where friction could occur. And then the other thing is, how would this waiver process create a precedent for other uses as allowed in the land use code? This would be unique to mining. And so how is this not, you know, why would this sort of thing not also apply to other use standards for other uses and activities within the code?”

Most commissioners agreed that waiving a standard for a mining application would exclude the public process — something Planning Commissioner Josselin Lifton-Zoline said is critical.

“I from what they’re saying about waiving the appeal, not the appeals process, the review criteria, I just don’t think we can do that,” Lifton-Zoline said. “It doesn’t make sense. I think it opens us up to actually making it impossible for people to get through that process because of public pushback, because of the amount of responsibility and liability that it gives to the Planning Department. I think we have to have that public process, even if the standards for a small operation are much different than for a much bigger one.”

Planning Commissioner Hallie Simpson agreed that a waiver of standards would move the approval process behind closed doors.

“I think, largely coming from Jocelyn about the public process and wanting to have the opportunity for public comment, public feedback, and then a response from the applicant,” Simpson said. “So if the public raises a concern, the applicant can say, here’s how we’re addressing it. If we’re waiving all this before submittal of materials, it’s all washed under the rug and nobody gets to see it, and all of that public process goes away.”

Since 2022, seven mining exploration permits have been approved in the county, most for uranium and vanadium. Adam Eckman, president of the Colorado Mining Association, said the waiver process gives too much discretion to the county and not enough certainty to operators.

“So our overarching request would be to set this over to provide more time to drill down on waiver and appeal language that will work for everyone,” Eckman said.

Planning Commissioners agreed to recommend removing the waiver of standards and the appeal process from the new mining regulations, but to keep the waiver of application materials consistent with other land use code applications. The Board of County Commissioners is expected to hear the regulations again in November for a possible final approval.

A Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Night at the Theatre

It won’t take a spoonful of sugar to make a night at the theater this weekend a sweet treat.

The Sheridan Arts Foundation’s Not So Young People’s Theatre is taking the stage with a production of the beloved 1964 classic film adaptation, Mary Poppins.

“Mary Poppins is really at its core about a family in trouble,” said Jennifer Nyman Julia, director of Mary Poppins.

“It’s about a dad who’s disconnected from his kids and his wife. Kids who desperately want to connect with their father, and are misbehaving because they just feel sad. The Mary Poppins character — although she is the central role — she’s there to help them get back to where they need to be, and that’s really the story of it. It’s a magical person who’s helping, but it’s really about a family in need.”

But as Leah Heidenreich explained, the story is far from a melancholy drama.

“It’s wrapped in the really pretty bow of Julie Andrews’ beloved music, where she’s taking them on different adventures with all those iconic songs that everyone knows and loves,” said Heidenreich, the musical director of the show and the actor playing the titular role.

She said it’s been a blast to play the part and to find her own version of Mary Poppins.

“It’s been a huge blessing to have Jen direct me and help me find her in the way I see her, not the way Julie Andrews saw her back in the ’60s,” Heidenreich said. “It’s been really fun to sing those iconic songs, I’m not going to lie.”

The show features a cast of 25, with actors ranging in age from 10 to 71. Nyman Julia said it’s the people that truly bring the story to life.

“There are people in this cast who have never been in a play, that are doing so well, and it’s so beautiful to watch them, and they’re so entertaining,” she said. “Then on the other end of that spectrum, you have Leah as Mary Poppins, and her husband Ryan Heidenreich as Bert, and they’re both professional actors and they’re so good. The fact that they’re husband and wife, their dynamic, is super fun. That adds another level to the show. Even though they’re not playing themselves, they love each other and they’re playing people who love each other. That’s really nice to see.”

Heidenreich said Mary Poppins is the perfect production for the current moment.

“It’s just such a fun escape. Right now, we really need that. We really need theatre and art that is lighthearted, but still touches you, that is extremely nostalgic, and whimsical, that really focuses on being kind,” she said.

And for those who may not be fans of musical theatre, Heidenreich offered reassurance.

“Anyone who says ‘I hate musicals’ (because there are those people in the world), they’re going to love Mary Poppins because it’s supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” she said.

The Not So Young People’s Theatre production of Mary Poppins opens at the Sheridan Opera House on Thursday, Oct. 16, and runs through Sunday, Oct. 19, with shows at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and a matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Tickets are available at sheridanoperahouse.com.

Jim Morrison skis first descent of Everest’s Hornbein Couloir

American ski mountaineer Jim Morrison has successfully skied the first descent of the Hornbein Couloir on Mount Everest.

After several attempts, the Lake Tahoe skier summited Everest around 12:45 p.m. local time and descended on skis over the next four and a half hours. Morrison was joined on the six-and-a-half-week expedition by a full team of Sherpas and filmmakers, including Oscar-winning explorer and filmmaker Jimmy Chin and Chai Vasarhelyi.

In a social media post about the groundbreaking descent, Morrison said he skied in honor of his late partner, and Telluride local Hilaree Nelson, who died three years ago during an expedition with him on Manaslu, an 8,000-meter peak. Morrison said he and Nelson had planned to ski the Hornbein Couloir together. The couple previously skied the first descent of the Lhotse Couloir, a neighboring 8,000-meter peak next to Everest.

Manhunt Ends with Arrest in San Luis Valley

A five-day manhunt in the San Luis Valley ended with the arrest of Paul Sandoval, a 62-year-old man who had been on the run for more than four years over an alleged child sexual assault.

The manhunt involved about 70 law enforcement officials from multiple federal and state agencies. In March 2021, a warrant was issued for Sandoval’s arrest in Alamosa County for felony sexual assault of a child. Sandoval was spotted this past August breaking into a home in Alamosa County, and law enforcement confirmed he was armed with a rifle.

Sandoval was found in remote backcountry near Blanca Peak, outside of Alamosa. He is being held at the Alamosa County Jail awaiting the next steps in his criminal process.

Storms Flood San Juans, Damage Homes and Businesses

Major storms from the Pacific Ocean brought two to four inches of rain to the San Juan Mountains over the weekend, resulting in major floods that overwhelmed Pagosa Springs and La Plata County. The flooding caused more than $1 million in damage and destroyed homes and businesses.

It’s not yet clear how much federal assistance will be available with the ongoing government shutdown.

Rocky Mountain Community Radio’s Caroline Llanes reports.

Story begins at 14:30.

State Activates Emergency Plan as Prisons Overflow Into County Jails

Overcrowding in Colorado’s prisons is spilling into county jails. The state has activated an emergency plan for the first time to ease the strain.

But as Kyle McKinnon reports for the Colorado Capitol News Alliance, local leaders and advocates say it’s only a short-term fix to a problem that’s getting worse.

Story begins at 15:55.

– ICE Arrest Reported in Telluride

– Planning Commission Hears Mining Regulations–Again

– A Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Night at the Theatre

[515

post-7213","news","type-news","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","news-category-newscasts

Newscast 10-15-25 - KOTO FM

<meta name="description" content="In Today's Headlines: ICE Arrest Reported in Telluride.
