We didn’t bring it up. It was a family issue. It was thought of as something that you deal with personally and internally,” Farr said.

She said awareness begins by talking openly about domestic violence.

“The more awareness we have, the more we talk about it, the more comfortable victims feel coming forward, and then the more help they can get, the more we can address what barriers there are to leaving domestic violence relationships,” Farr said.

Domestic violence is not limited to physical harm. Farr said there are emotional, financial, social, and community-wide impacts that make it difficult for victims to leave abusive relationships.

“Financial barriers are the number one reason, the number one impact on whether or not somebody can leave a domestic balanced relationship. And so when we have a lack of housing, when we have a lack of food security, when there isn’t child care, when you know things are expensive and there’s low paying jobs, all of those things really impact domestic violence victims,” she said.

Farr said SMRC assists with housing and financial support, employment searches, legal fees, and protection order filings.

“We also help people connect to their own social networks and help them figure out who is safe in their social networks to rely on and ask for help. We remind them that if somebody is in their social network and needed help, they would want to know that and be able to help the way they can. So we encourage them in those ways,” Farr said.

For those looking to help, Farr said SMRC welcomes volunteers to assist with the 24/7 helpline, especially during nights or weekends. To become a trained victim advocate, visit smrcco.org to learn more.

Farr added that SMRC is always ready to listen.

“Anybody you know, in an abusive relationship or struggling with some interpersonal violence that hasn’t reached out to us. I would, I would really like people to know you don’t have to be ready. You don’t have to know what ready is. You don’t have to be prepared. You don’t have to know what you need. You don’t have to be ready to leave anywhere you’re at in your journey, we would be happy to support you. We’re never going to pressure you, judge you. If you’ve reached out before and we helped you get out and you’re back in it, please reach out again. We want to support you. There’s no shame, and we’re truly just here to help empower and support you in the ways that work for you,” she said.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month runs through October. Purple is the color to show your support.

For anyone in need of help or someone to talk to, SMRC’s 24/7 helpline is available at 970-728-5660.
