After two failed votes, Norwood School District Bond Measure 5A passed in both San Miguel and Montrose counties, with 65% and 58% of voters saying yes, respectively.

Norwood Mayor Candy Meehan says the vote represents more than just a new school.

Meehan said, “I’m super humbled by the trust that the community has shown, and profoundly grateful to hear the heart, the energy, the honesty and that so many people poured into this effort. For volunteers who walked door to door to the parents, the teachers, the neighbors, who asked the hard questions, they stayed engaged and every single conversation mattered. This is a defining step for Wright’s Mesa. The new pre-K to 12 campus will give our children a safe, modern and inspiring place to learn while the planned transformation of the existing school property into a community hub will strengthen the fabric of Norwood for generations to come.”

This year, the bond committee, local elected officials and community leaders emphasized the urgent need for a new school. The existing school buildings, constructed in the 1950s and 1960s, face chronic maintenance issues — including a leaking roof, asbestos and unreliable heating.

The bond measure will collect roughly $8 million from community members to complement a $52 million Colorado BEST grant to construct a new school across from the Lone Cone Library. Many residents said this was the last chance for Norwood to secure the state grant, given the current funding deficit.

District 3 County Commissioner Galena Gleason says the new school will help secure the town’s future.

Gleason said, “Everything in my mind, it really secures our economic vitality. I feel, you know, a community is nothing without the institutions that hold it up, and I believe that schools are the real keystone of those institutions, and being able to secure this funding and follow through with a plan to build a new, modern and safe facility really just ensures the future of Norwood, not only for our students, but for businesses and looking forward. You know, this is something that we can kind of lean on, knowing that we’re going to have a really solid school facility.”

Norwood voters also elected two new school board members — Brandi Griffith and Randy Harris. Griffith says while the new school will be a focus, the current school remains a priority.

Griffith said, “I still want to focus on the inner workings of the school. You know, building a new school is exciting, but our students have to go to the existing school for the next two years at least. I would imagine, I don’t know any firm timelines, but keeping our attention on serving the current students and the current administration and curriculum, and deciding how we can best do that in the middle of building a school seems like a pretty important focus.”

The new school is expected to be completed within the next few years. Meehan says the existing building will be repaired and repurposed.

Meehan said, “This will open up, you know, sizable opportunity for other, you know, nonprofits or special districts to come in and potentially occupy that space with us. Right now, there’s, you know, it’s whatever our canvas is, kind of blank to be truthful. We can paint this any way we want to.”

Meehan says the process brought the community closer together.

Meehan said, “It’s not any one board, the town or the campaign, but a collective belief that our small town is worth investing in, and we stood together, and we found something that transcends the building and the budget. We stood for our future, and I truly believe that that is what the turning point was this time.”

Griffith says Norwood’s sense of community is something special.

Griffith said, “It’s just really amazing and fun to be part of small town America and all of the parades and you know, just the different feel and vibe of getting to know your neighbors and who the people are when you’re doing pickup and drop off, and being on a first-name basis with teachers and administration already is just a huge blessing and a huge gift to someone who grew up in such a big metropolitan area, so I love that, and I embrace that, and I want to protect that for everyone that is from here and everyone that comes here.”

Election results will be certified before the end of the month. The bond committee and the school board will now begin charting a path forward to build a new public school in the Town of Norwood.

Filmmaker Max Walker-Silverman Comes Home

Max Walker-Silverman grew up amongst the strong arts and film world of Telluride. After his 2022 debut film “A Love Song,” his new film “Rebuilding” explores a rural ranching family’s efforts to rebuild after a wildfire destroys their home. The film recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, now its playing in Telluride tomorrow at the Palm Theater. Walker-Silverman says the themes of climate change, loss, and hope are built from his own experiences in the changing American West landscapes. KOTO’s Mason Osgood has more on the film, and Walker-Silverman’s filmmaking journey.

Walker-Silverman’s film “Rebuilding” is playing in Telluride this Friday, November 7th at the Palm Theater. Admission is free, the film starts at 7pm.

Story begins at 5:35

Food Stamps Benefits Cut in November

The government shutdown has entered its 37th day. On Nov. 1, millions of Americans lost their SNAP, or food stamp, benefits. In San Miguel County, about 3% of residents receive some sort of SNAP assistance.

County Health and Human Services Director Linnea Edwards says she received word earlier this week about a small amount of emergency funding to help maintain SNAP benefits.

“We don’t know the amounts. There has been some communication on how quickly the states need to message this and implement this. However, there will still be a delay despite this emergency fund being released. This emergency fund will not be enough to cover a month of nationwide SNAP benefits, but a portion of it, and again, as we get more direction from the state,” Edwards said.

Nationally, it costs about $8 billion a month for the U.S. Department of Agriculture to maintain SNAP benefits. The emergency fund has around $5 billion. Edwards says food banks in the county are preparing for an increase in demand.

“I think our regional food pantries are seen to have an understanding. Seem to be prepared. Seem to be ready for any kind of influx. And I think the one question is, based on the influx of the first two weeks, will there be the option of increasing some availability for people to utilize the food pantries, specifically in Telluride, possibly Ouray. I mean extended hours, extended hours, or an extended day. I know, I know that’s challenging for the Norwood Food Pantry, but I think there’s also something to be said, depending on what that looks like after the first couple weeks,” Edwards said.

Edwards says around 245 people in the county have lost their food stamp benefits. How long the shutdown lasts — or how much federal funding remains available — is still unclear.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen in four or five weeks, so in four or five weeks, we may have some giving fatigue from our community, from our citizens, and that’s when maybe we need to jump in and provide a different level of kind of oversight or financial support and just really being a little bit more conservative in I think our community is doing a really great job. I want to support that action. Situation, but when or if that can’t continue, then we are that we have that contingency plan and could do something else depending on how long this lasts. So I think just sitting in a more conservative space around how we hold that money and what we do with it next,” Edwards said.

County commissioners discussed the possibility of tapping into emergency or reserve funds to assist with lost benefits but agreed to continue monitoring the situation and how community support nonprofits are helping with food security efforts.

Montrose County Recalls Commissioner Scott Mijares

The recall election for Montrose County Commissioner Scott Mijares was successful, with 52% of county voters saying yes. Montrose residents collected the required 4,500 signatures in August this year to put Mijares’s recall on the ballot. Mijares took office last year, and was the center of several resignations and firings of County employees, including County Managers and Attorneys. Replacing Mijares is Kristin Copeland, a 30 year resident of Montrose, former Colorado Parks and Wildlife Park Ranger, and a longtime unaffiliated voter.

Roller Derby 101 Rolls Into Norwood

The Norwood Park and Recreation District is inviting community members to lace up for a new event this weekend.

On Saturday, Nov. 8, the district will host Roller Derby 101 at The Pig Palace Rink at the San Miguel County Fairgrounds in Norwood. The session runs from noon to 3 p.m. and will be led by Lunachick Gypsy, a former member of New York’s Port City Roller Derby.

The event is free and open to adults 18 and older of all skating abilities. Attendees can participate on skates or simply watch and learn about the sport. Participants are asked to bring their own skates, helmets, pads and water.

Organizers say if there’s enough community interest, weekly Saturday meetups could continue until ice is made for the winter season.

For more information, contact the Norwood Park and Recreation District.

San Miguel County Democrats Host Annual Potluck in Placerville

The San Miguel County Democrats are hosting their annual potluck this weekend.
