As KOTO’s first rural reporter, he expanded the station’s coverage to better represent communities across the region. Now, he’s heading to warmer climes. KOTO News sat down with Osgood to reflect on his time at the station and say goodbye.

Story beings at

West End Uranium Heats Up

When President Donald Trump signed an executive order earlier this year to “unleash American energy,” he called uranium a critical mineral. That perked the ears of a small group of miners across the American West.

Like many minerals, uranium is highly dependent on markets. It doesn’t make sense to mine unless prices are high enough. The spot price of uranium jumped to $100 in January when Trump took office, the highest in five years. It has since stabilized around $70, and now uranium miners are looking to cash in.

It’s a sunny afternoon in the West End of San Miguel County, Colorado. Tucked into the side of Big Gypsum Canyon, a couple miles north of the Dolores River, sits the Sunday Mine Uranium Complex, an area that has produced uranium ore since the 1970s.

Behind it all is George Glasier, CEO of Western Uranium and Vanadium. A Nucla resident, Glasier has spent most of his life in the uranium business. He helped build the only operating uranium mill in the country, the White Mesa Mill, and founded Energy Fuels, the company behind it.

After entering the main portal of Sunday Mines, visitors spend 20 minutes driving underground. Turning on headlamps reveals a massive room dotted with piles of uranium ore.

“That’s oxidized uranium, whereas black that’s probably uranium vanadium. It oxidizes with air, turns yellow,” Glasier said.

Mining for uranium is part science, part art. Glasier and his crew of miners seek out seams of uranium through horizontal exploration drilling and probing to find a millable grade of ore—about a quarter of a percent of uranium per 5 pounds per ton of rock.

Bruce Norquist, general manager of mining operations at Sunday Mines, waved a Geiger counter around like a metal detector.

“This is in micro R per hour, but it’s still measuring gamma. We do everything—most of our probes for ore control are in percent uranium—but this will tell me whether it’s hot or not,” Norquist said. “It’s funny, when you see the yellow you see the gamma meter go up and obviously our U308 probes go up. Then you can get into zones that don’t look like nothing and you go on it and it gets even higher. Then you go into a black zone that looks like ore and it’s nothing. So it’s quite variable, but overall the average is a millable grade.”

Glasier and his team have been stockpiling uranium ore underground since 2023, betting that prices would rise so they could sell it to the White Mesa Mill for processing. That time has arrived. Glasier finalized an ore purchase agreement with Energy Fuels for the delivery of up to 25,000 tons of uranium ore over one year.

In a press release, the company said about 792 tons of material has been delivered just across the state line at White Mesa in recent months. It’s an interesting relationship, given that Glasier helped build the mill and later bought the Sunday Mines back from Energy Fuels.

“They probably regret selling these things, because these are some of their best,” Glasier said. “I think we’re friends”

Glasier has said he plans to open another uranium mill with his company, either in Utah or in nearby Paradox Valley.

What’s clear is that Glasier has a lot of ore. With Trump touting domestic energy production, he said his mining crew has doubled since last year and will double again if uranium prices climb higher. Most of his crew, Glasier said, are locals from the West End.

“I think you’re going to need domestic production here,” Glasier said. “We’ve got demand of 50 million pounds and growing in the United States, and a lot of the uranium is produced in the world in Africa. Don’t even know if they’re going to be able to ship to us. The Russians, Niger was a big uranium producer. The French had a big mine there and they kicked them out.”

The White Mesa Mill in Blanding, Utah, operated by Energy Fuels, has long drawn criticism from the neighboring White Mesa Ute community and environmentalists.

In a recent letter signed by more than 20 organizations to Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, they wrote: “This practice perpetuates environmental harm and systemic injustice against Indigenous peoples who have long borne the disproportionate impacts of the nuclear industry.”

Despite shipments of uranium ore to Utah, Western Uranium and Vanadium said: “Given recent turbulence in global commodity and financial markets, along with geopolitical uncertainties, we have shifted to a more conservative stance, increasingly focusing on cost control.”

Telluride Approves EDM Concert and Jazz Expansion

Planet Bluegrass will return to Town Park twice next year — for its traditional Telluride Bluegrass Festival and a second electronic music concert in August.

“The musical identity that Telluride has is something we should lean into. We have the beautiful stage, the beautiful venue. I think we should try to have as much music there as possible,” said Zach Tucker, vice president of Planet Bluegrass, during a presentation before Town Council on Tuesday.

“Telluride has such a cool history with bluegrass, and jazz, and Blues & Brews. I think being able to adapt and bring in newer music, different types of genres and continue that for us is a real benefit to all of us,” he added.

The application is for a concert similar to Camp Alderwild, the two-night event Planet Bluegrass hosted in Town Park in August. The organization has not confirmed an artist yet but plans to have music similar to EDM artist Of the Trees, who performed this year. Their application states an artist will be confirmed by May 1 at the latest.

The two-night concert is scheduled for Aug. 28-29, 2026, with a 9,000-person capacity each night. The Parks and Recreation Commission approved music to run from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

A major challenge for the 2025 concert was its overlap with the Telluride Mountain Run. Next year, an “extra” weekend in August separates the two events. Planet Bluegrass has indicated it would like to return in future years, but the current approval is for one year only.

The Parks and Recreation Commission and the Commission for Community Assistance, Arts & Special Events approved the event earlier this fall. Town Council was the final step.

Noise remains a concern. The Telluride Marshal’s Department and other government officials received numerous complaints from neighbors about heavy bass. Tucker said the organization will address concerns this year. Music will end half an hour earlier, per Parks and Rec stipulations.

“I’m well aware that last year wasn’t good, and we have ground to make up on that. We’ve got a new audio company engaged on this already, and they have a new sound system that really lets you digitally map everything and the speakers have the ability to control, not only how they’re hung, but how they digitally process themselves. They give you a lot of flexibility for making sure the sound stays where you want it,” Tucker said.

Another point of contention is Planet Bluegrass’ partner for the concert, AEG, an international live entertainment company.

“One of the biggest reasons that we need AEG on board for this is so that we can have 50% of the risk going to them. That’s the reason it’s a viable undertaking for us to be here. In addition to that, we’re pretty good at booking Sam Bush, but we’re not that good at booking electric dance stuff, and so being able to utilize their network, and their booking team to know what is hip in that world and making sure we’re putting on a high-caliber show that people would want to come down to Telluride and see is important,” Tucker said.

During public comment, residents voiced opinions on noise and the partnership with AEG.

Michael Tobin expressed concerns about sound.
“Overall, I’d say the majority of people on the east end I’ve spoken with don’t really want this to happen again. There’s a reason they haven’t had an EDM show in Lyons, Colorado, because I think it would piss off their neighbors too,” he said.

Patrick Shehan, who works for local music promoter SBG Productions, criticized the AEG partnership.
“You guys say we need AEG, the Wal-Mart of concert producers — which is predatory towards independent promoters — to come to our town and produce an event is insane to me. It’s very disrespectful,” Shehan said.

On the other hand, Sarah Friedberg supported the event.
“To take this risk and bring this new energy to town, and the community it brought here was so impressive. I thought it was important to see that energy in town, kind of come alive again. I appreciate that Planet Bluegrass is trying to do something a little different,” she said.

Council members expressed similar views. Elena Levin supports the concert.
“I really like this event and I want it to be able to continue to happen in some capacity,” she said. But she criticized the AEG partnership.
“We invited Planet Bluegrass, and AEG is their plus one — who none of us like. We know that you guys are dating and hope you guys break up,” Levin said.

Councilmember Meehan Fee also supported the event but emphasized addressing sound issues.
“Truly address the concerns that have been brought to us by the people that live here so we can continue to do this year over year, because we also, certainly, heard the incredible positive comments about what came about from this weekend,” Fee said.

Town Council approved the concert for one year only, 4-2. Councilmembers Meehan Fee, Elena Levin, Marya Stark and Kristen Permakoff voted in support. Councilmember Dan Enright and Mayor Teddy Errico voted against. Councilmember Ashley Von Spreecken recused herself.

At the same meeting, Town Council approved increasing the Telluride Jazz Festival’s daily capacity from 2,999 to 6,000 people.

Steve Gumble, president of SBG Productions, which produces the Jazz Festival, said a larger capacity is necessary.
“We’re just asking for more people, warm bodies, to try to pay for the ever-increasing expenses of producing an event here in Telluride. The cost of entertainment, of bands, is astronomical. We cannot remain competitive because of our restrictions and amount of money we can generate at the current level we’re at,” he said.

Town Council approved the increase unanimously. The Telluride Jazz Festival will take place Aug. 7-9, 2026, in Town Park.

Very Merry Market Brings Holiday Cheer to Mountain Village

Mountain Village will be filled with holiday cheer this weekend as it hosts the Very Merry Market.

The market will feature more than 20 local and regional artists and artisans offering a range of goods, including jewelry, textiles, ceramics and gourmet treats.

Visitors can warm up at the Holiday Spirits and Hot Cocoa Bar, which will serve hot chocolate, cider and festive drinks. Families can also enjoy cookie decorating, arts and crafts stations, and caroling karaoke.

The Very Merry Market will take place Sunday, Dec. 21, from noon to 6 p.m. at the Telluride Conference Center.

Colorado Gray Wolf Returned after Capture in New Mexico

A Colorado gray wolf is back in the state after being captured in New Mexico by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish.

According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the wolf, identified as 2403, was captured Dec. 11. Under a reintroduction agreement with neighboring states, gray wolves that cross state lines are returned to Colorado.

Wolf 2403 was previously a member of the Copper Creek pack but left the pack earlier this fall.

After being returned to Colorado, CPW relocated the wolf to an area away from livestock, near natural prey populations and close to an unpaired female gray wolf in an effort to encourage pairing.

Colorado Sues Trump Administration Over EV Funding Delays

Colorado is suing the Trump administration over actions it says are stalling funding for electric vehicle infrastructure.

Attorney General Phil Weiser is part of a 16-state coalition that filed a lawsuit Tuesday, alleging the U.S. Department of Transportation is breaking the law by refusing to approve new funding under EV programs established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The programs were created to build and repair EV charging stations and to develop new technology. No new funding has been approved since the spring.

Colorado State University is still awaiting millions of dollars in previously awarded funding to build public hydrogen fueling stations.

Vonn Wins Season-Opening Downhill in St. Moritz

Lindsey Vonn stunned the ski world over the weekend, racing to the top of the podium in the season’s first downhill at St. Moritz, Switzerland.
