It has an expiration date. It expires 5 p.m. on Tuesday,\u201d said Katherine Devlin, vice president of the Telluride Ski Patrol Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re extremely hopeful that we can get on the same page, and then, hopefully, they can ask ownership for that number that we need added to the pie,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Telluride Ski Patrol began contract negotiations with Telluride Ski Resort in early June, and the previous contract expired in August. Ski patrol members are currently working on the mountain without a contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Devlin said she cannot share the exact figures included in the proposal in order to give Telluride Ski Resort, also known as Telski, time to review it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn all fairness, we want to give them time to process that excel sheet, and we all want to come to the same number. We feel we\u2019ve made a big jump and we\u2019re at our bottom line,\u201d Devlin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said she believes the proposal would be acceptable to union members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe definitely feel what we\u2019ve presented our membership would vote on,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Devlin said the union\u2019s goal remains to avoid a strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very aware of the effects that would have, not only directly to our group, but to everyone who works for Telski. A lot of people in the community are going to be affected. It\u2019s a big deal and we do take it very seriously,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said union leadership is optimistic a contract agreement is near.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe really hope we can come to an agreement; we can make a deal. I truly think we\u2019ve made a big movement and it\u2019s really possible. We\u2019re close. We\u2019re definitely very close,\u201d Devlin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ski Patrol Union and Telluride Ski Resort are scheduled to meet again Monday evening to ensure both sides are aligned on the proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The union has given Telluride Ski Resort a deadline of 5 p.m. Tuesday to accept or reject the offer. The resort had not made a decision by broadcast deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Devlin said regardless of the resort\u2019s decision, ski patrol plans to hold a union membership meeting Tuesday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Free Box Closes at Night<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Free Box in Telluride will now close at night following a series of issues, including illegal dumping, damage and safety concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Free Box has been seeing a sad bout of vandalism, misuse, and a bit of abuse, to be honest,\u201d said Lindsey Mills, Telluride communications manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town took over management of the Free Box several years ago. After multiple incidents, Mills said public works and the marshal\u2019s department decided to close it overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a news release, Telluride Chief Marshal Josh Comte called the change \u201cnecessary\u201d to protect the \u201ccommunity resource.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mills said people should follow a simple guideline when using the Free Box: if you wouldn\u2019t give it to your neighbor, don\u2019t put it in the box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPut things that can be reused in there, that no longer are serving you, but don\u2019t put broken items, don\u2019t put trash, don\u2019t put hazardous materials, file it away nicely. Fold your clothes, and maybe wash them before you put them in, and don\u2019t put things on the ground. If the free box is full, come back another day,\u201d Mills said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added that large items, like mattresses, chairs and couches, are not allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the heart of it, Mills said it\u2019s important to respect the Free Box, which she described as a staple that keeps Telluride \u201cfunky and weird.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you think about why the Free Box became, and why it is a longstanding staple in the Town of Telluride is because it provided neighborly behavior and opportunity to acquire necessary and useful things for folks that otherwise couldn\u2019t find those items. You can go find presents, you can go find fashion, you can go find cookware, you can go find glassware, you can find something you\u2019ll use for a party and then return it to the Free Box for someone else to use. The importance of the privilege of the Free Box is that it does continue perpetuating that community aspect,\u201d Mills said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Free Box will begin closing overnight from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., using a garage door installed when it moved to its current location at the Voodoo building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solstice Frost<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On Sunday, December 21st, the Northern Hemisphere celebrated the shortest day of the year, and the longest night. The towns of Telluride and Mountain Village, along with San Miguel County, are proposing a regional e-bike share program and are seeking community feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the proposal, e-bikes would be placed at multiple locations in Telluride and Mountain Village, as well as along the Spur and in Lawson Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officials say a community e-bike program could provide residents and visitors with another way to travel throughout the region, ease parking demand and reduce traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A survey about the proposed e-bike share program is available at bit.ly\/mvebikesurvey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hundreds Protest Proposed NCAR Shutdown<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hundreds of people gathered in Boulder on Saturday to protest the Trump administration\u2019s decision to shut down the National Center for Atmospheric Research, known as NCAR. The center has played a key role in advancing climate and weather research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. Rep. Joe Neguse, D-Colo., said the move is illegal and vowed a strong response from Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou&#8217;re gonna see a very muscular response on our part and on the part of many in Congress, who believe this to be one of the most dangerous and reckless decisions that Donald Trump has made in his 11 months in office,\u201d Neguse said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. John Hickenlooper, D-Colo., said he would block a Senate spending bill unless funding for NCAR is restored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re gonna stop this appropriation bill. We will tie it up for as long as we can, which is weeks and weeks,\u201d Hickenlooper said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NCAR\u2019s research and forecasting models have also been used to predict extreme wind events, including the one that led Xcel Energy to shut off power to thousands of customers last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New Colorado Law Tightens Gun Show Regulations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A new state law that took effect Thursday tightens regulations on the hundreds of gun shows held in Colorado each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The law bars anyone under 18 from entering gun shows without a parent or guardian and requires shows to ensure that each gun sale complies with Colorado\u2019s three-day waiting period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gun show operators must also implement security measures, share a security plan with local law enforcement and carry liability insurance. Operators face a class 2 misdemeanor for a first violation. A second offense is a class 1 misdemeanor and includes a five-year ban from holding gun shows in Colorado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The law does not apply to shows that only include antique firearms.
